Years ago, my dads college ring was stolen from me. About 2 years later I got a phone call from a person asking if I had lost a college ring. I told him I had one stolen from me. After I identified the ring and proved to him I was the right person he was looking for, he told me he will ship it to me. He had seen it on eBay and thought it might be lost or stolen since no one sells a college ring, especially one from the A&M College of Texas, class of '56. He sent it to me and refused to be reimbursed for his cost. (Aggies are really special folks)
I did get the sellers ID number from him along with a copy of the eBay page selling the ring. With a friend of mine who was a detective in the sheriffs office at the time and another lawyer friend I was able to report the ring as stolen merchandise sold on eBay. After we contacted eBay, they were more than willing to help in any way they could. I mean they sent every scrap piece of paper that they had on the sale of the ring, and more.
Turned out the seller was a former girlfriend. Not a easy break up.
She was arrested and charged with possession of and selling stolen merchandise, and something along the lines of using the US Postal Service to move stolen merchandise and selling across state lines. Since she is a Dr., she was able to get a lawyer that got her off the big charges and she plead guilty to a lesser charge, then asked for deferred adjudication. But it still cost her big money. According to my detective buddy she spent almost 40K to get out of it. A little more than the 245 bucks she got for the ring.
