[N/A] CFIT...

Sounds like she is lined up for hand me down Taurus, personally I would not put any money into that car, take the hand me down if that's the case. Keep studying hard and working toward or on a career. Then get something nice when finances allow.

That'd be pretty cool, but considering it's a daily commuter vehicle with over half the days below freezing and many below zero, a motorcycle would probably the best way to end up with frostbite. LOL Actually, the deer would probably be a bigger problem. I seem to recall someone saying that hitting on a deer with a motorcycle is always one of their biggest worries, especially during night driving... :D (It also might be a good idea to ride along with someone else before I attempt to drive one, considering I've never been on one before! Though it'd be more like my style to just get on and try. LOL)

I talked to my mechanic. He said it looked like it would need a new a/c compressor (if desired. LOL), radiator/fan assembly, new headlights, interior bumper "scaffolding", and maybe a new hood if they couldn't get it straightened out enough to reliably latch. The frame didn't look bad, and they're actually one of the best at frame straightening in the area, so...we'll see. He's going to price it out on Monday and let me know what it looks like it'd cost to fix it. So I get a few more days before I have to give up on the idea of driving it again. :p

You’re right. Considering your geography, a snowmobile would probably be a much better choice.

I refuse to ride much at night (especially in rural areas) for that reason.

I agree. I don't ride the motorcycle in the dark unless it becomes absolutely necessary. I also try to avoid, riding in the rain, Interstate highways, or holidays (that's when the crazies are out). I've had a number of deer pass in front of the bike but so far nothing has been close enough to take my breath away.

Well, I would recommend that if SkyChaser is going to go Taurus, get a Taurus SHO. Late 80's model had the Yamaha V6 that was fun and punchy for its time (and manual transmission.) Probably very reasonably priced now.

Or if so inclined, a SVT Contour. I had one of those and it was a lot of fun, well balanced chassis (surprising for a FWD vehicle). Or a SVT Focus (the younger cousin to your ZX2.)

I had a 91 Taurus SHO 5-spd. Fun car, but I would imagine that getting parts for that Yamaha 24V V6 is getting increasingly difficult. If a fun car with lots of support and dead simple is on the ticket, I'd just find an F-body Firebird/Camaro. 3800 v6 is hard to kill, tens of thousands of them made, so parts are plentiful and prices are cheap. The V6s haven't likely been beaten on as hard as the Z28/SS models.

So, @SkyChaser , what’s the latest? Repair? Boring Taurus? Shiny new Camaro? Hitchhike?

I just got the estimate this afternoon. $2034 using the cheapest parts available right now, with no guarantee those parts work for long. So, I'm going to have to figure out how to let go of the Escort, because as much as I want to be stupid and repair it, I can't afford to do that if it's not going to return the investment in miles driven. :(

The local dealer is getting a new bunch of used cars in this week, so I'm going to go gawk at those and hope there's something more appealing than an old Taurus. I really hate this. And yes, I know it's ridiculous. :p

Sorry to hear that, but really, $2k for the repair isn’t too surprising. If you have to get something boring for now, just remind yourself that it’s merely your next car, not your last car. It won’t be forever.

I know. I was just hoping that maybe my car's twin just had been rear-ended or something, so it would be cheap to get new front end parts... LOL I think the biggest problem with the boring cars is that they're still waaay up at pretty much the highest price I can go, so it's hard to think of spending that much for a boring car!

I’m actually surprised the insurance company didn’t total it.

The used car market has been sky high for the past several years to the point that it almost makes sense to buy new, especially with some of the incentives being offered and low interest rates right now. It’s hard to find a decent used car for a fair price. :(

Good luck!

She said she was only carrying liability coverage, not collision. Liability would pay for damage to the deer, and the deer was totaled.

I don’t think that’s true, at least locally. I buy nearly all my vehicles used, and I’ve purchased an F150 and a Challenger recently. Both with less than 20k miles, in great shape, remaining factory warranty, and at good prices. Low interest rates don’t matter unless you’re financing.
