I had an idea the other night for a simple app. Of course it turns out it's already been invented at least a half dozen times. But it got me interested.

What SDK and tools are necessary to create an Android or IOS app?

To develop an ios app you need a mac with xcode. To deploy said app to the store you need to spend $100/yr.

Google android I suggest you download eclipse with the android plugin.

Matthew, I do android devel. PM me and I'll be happy to help.

For Android, you need Java and SDK from Google.

The usual suggestion is to use Eclipse IDE, but it was crashing too much for me, so I gave up on it. Using vi instead.

Isn't there something ironic about developer software/platform crashing? :yikes:

Downloading Eclipse and ADT right now.

The app idea I had has already been invented several times. But it did get me thinking of ways to use some tools for other projects. I think I'll play around with it and some tutorials and see where it goes.

For iPhone you download the XCode development environment. It's free. If you actually want to put apps in the appstore, you need to pay the $99 (annual) to joint the developer's program. If you just want to put apps in your own device, you don't need the latter.

Apple do take a bite.

So far have created the "Hello World!" example. Now have to figure out how to create an AVD or something so I can run it and see what happens. That's going to have to wait for me to read the instructions and download whatever other tools are necessary. This will be interesting.

I hate to say it but avds run better for me on mac than on windows......
