My First Overhead Break.....

I believe 35AOA is referring to the carrier break (800 ft AGL) as no longer available most places, not the field break (1000 ft AGL).

Nauga,
and some tales to tell...

That's how I understood him as well. Just really sucks that something like that is not being allowed due to something as stupid as noise abatement.

People buy houses so closes to the base and complain about noise?? WTF were they expecting in the first place? I'm sure the base was there before they arrived.

All it takes is someone being offended, when they moved in is irrelevant.

If done properly, noise shouldn't be an issue anyway. If you come in fast enough, you normally aren't coming out of idle until between the 90-180 position, and that's only to check the engine/set the throttle stop/etc.

Lighten up...he said it was his first one.

Hopefully it wouldn't be his first go-around though, right? No matter how you get to the threshold, if you can't make down on the first third of the runway you go around.

My hangar is on the other end of the runway. ;)

You start out as an amateur before going pro.

OK, if it was intentional that's a different story. If not, there's no shame in going around and trying it again. After all, going around = more flying = good.

Agreed, though I'm guessing what they are trying to avoid is the section of jets at 800' and 400 knots 2-3 miles ahead of the runway over downtown VA Beach in our case. The pattern is very loud whether it is at 600' or 1000', so who knows....

Well that's an easy fix: Stuka dive bomber approach! Make the initial 5000' and break altitude 800', problem solved. Until jets start lawn-darting at the approach end of the runway, lol!

It's loud here too....but no one is willing to let us build an OLF either.

haha nice. Actually, that is generally what approaching the carrier break feels like to me. Especially in Fallon.....that one has to be pretty aggressive if you are coming from pt Xray or Ford or something (entry/exit points to the NSAWC airspace) due to the terrain just to the east. Same deal with Miramar.....even the normal initial/break was like a space shuttle, as they would vector you basically just north of Miramar road (main east/west road a couple miles north of the runway), and you would be abeam the field heading east before they cleared you out of 16K ft for the big swooping turn down to Atlas/the initial. Got real sporty for a division, or if you had some F-5's or something in your formation.

I guess now that I think of it, with a sober head :) , there are maybe a decent amount of fields that still allow it. Most of my experience in the last number of years has been out of two of the most encroached and least popular fighter bases just about anywhere.....not to mention that we managed to chuck jets into both of their surrounding neighborhoods in that time span.
