I have 2 labs 1 is 4 years old, the other is 7, both male. They have been together since the 4 year old was a puppy. The 4 year old has been the alpha for a while. Suddenly the 4 year old has started getting REALLY excited when he's around the 7 year old, which for the most part is all the time. He aggressively and obsessively licks him amongst other things and is generally harassing him, but not fighting the older one will sometimes growl to get him to stop, but no biting. We have locked them in separate rooms but the 4 year old stands at the door and whines and wants "at him", we put them back together, same thing almost instantly. Anyone ever seen this? These dogs have been attached at the hip for 4 years, it's very strange. We dunno what to do, just started yesterday.

I heard some animals can act strangely before an earthquake.

Maybe your dog is gay?

FWIW we looked into a Great Dane a couple of years ago, boy was he gay. Another male dog showed up at the dog park and he immediately stopped playing with our female lab mix and started humping the poor labridoodle.

He's not humping him, he's more like in a panic and licks his back and paws at him, he seems distraught. Then he lays in the floor beside him and licks and paws at him. He does seem to be smelling his butt more often. I dunno, we think something is wrong with the 7 yo and the 4 yo is sensing it. It's a 180 degree turn in behavior from anything we've experienced in the last 4 years.

But yes, they are gay and we're OK with it, for some reason without fail and as sure as the sun will come up tomorrow, after a walk, when the 7 yo gets in the back of the truck the 4 yo humps him. Then before bed the 4 yo humps his dog bed.

Honestly I would probably call the Vet about the older dog

That's what we're going to do, the older one is asleep in the bedroom right now, young one is standing in the kitchen whining to get in. The older one is acting fine, he's always been slow and lazy but he's acting normal. We just thought he might have gotten in to something that's got the Brown one excited, I guess we'll give him a bath and see if that helps. It's very much like the black one is in heat, but he's male, old and fixed.

I had the same problem in my fish bowl. The vet recomended a head MRI on the agressive fish. But my cat solved the problem by tipping the bowl and eating both fish.

Sounds like normal "dog games". Do you exercise the dogs? As you well know labs are working dogs and need lots of exercise. Wear his little ass out for an hour or two and see if the "dog games" continue.

If that doesn't work, he's gay. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

He goes to the park for 2 hours per day, everyday and plays chuckit or follows my wife around on her mountain bike for 6-9 miles. He's well excersiced. Definitely not normal dog games.

My female will hump her brother, and I don't think she's transgender and I haven't found any unexplained credit card charges for strap-ons. Besides, they're both fixed.

It's just play and dominance.

Why did I post this?

I thought maybe the local vets would know something and give me some insight before we take them to the vet tomorrow.

Were still having to keep them separated today, 4 yr old is going nuts.

+1........

Dogs have an amazing sense to the metabolism of other animals and humans.....

First thing tomorrow,, get the older dog to the vet...

Boy dog needs fixed. Same thing happened to my boy dog, he went insane one day. One reverse bar mitzvah later, he's fine.

I just saw a Dog Whisperer where two female Jack Russell Terriers started fighting to the death.

Cesar figured out that the less confident one was causing the fights but it ended without a conclusion with the dogs in his pack, when the dominant dog got a medical problem.

Is the older dog any more lethargic than normal? Any signs of abdominal distress?

More lethargic would be hard to judge. He's always laying down unless we get him up to go do something, but he's been that way for years. I've been pushing on him, doesn't seem to cause discomfort, my wife isn't sure.

Both dogs are fixed correct?

I currently have one spry great dane pup in my house with my 4 year old Lab. The pup obsesses over my lab and licks him, bites his tail, won't leave him alone but everything I'm seeing is play. I'm sure you know the difference, and with two mature, fixed dogs to have a sudden change in behavior would be alarming. I would definitely call my vet.

The 7 year old is sick? Cancer and infections have a smell dogs can apparently detect.

The older dog's body chemistry has changed with age, just as it does in humans. I'd have the vet do complete blood/urine/fecal tests. The vet will probaly recommend a particular type of food, and/or supplements, either a multivitiman or something specifically for the liver or other major organ.
If the dog has intestinal parasites he could be passing some amounts of blood in his stools, which maybe the other dog thinks is his "period". On sign of such blood loss (and resultng anemia) would be pale gums and inside the ear flaps. Fleas also can cause anemia and they carry tapeworm eggs.

So how did the vet go today (assuming you went)? Hope all is well.
