I have now seen something about a half dozen times in US sources, including this board, about a British rock musician/singer (?) dying. I have never heard of him. Udo Jürgens also died this weekend. He was 80. I haven't seen anything about him except on German TV

Joe cocker was famous amongst old people. Yes you hippies are now old. No idea who udo was, are you 12 or 112?

Joe Cocker died yesterday. He achieved a degree of fame as a singer. His cover of the Beatles', "With a Little Help from My Friends", reached #1 in the UK in 1968 and he performed the song live at Woodstock in 1969. His 1975 cover of Billy Preston's "You Are So Beautiful", reached number five in the US. His duet with Jennifer Warnes, "Up Where We Belong", earned a Grammy in 1983.

I'd never heard of Udo Jürgens.

More like a regional thing. Joe Cocker had several hits and concert tours in the US. He was also named one of the 100 greatest singers of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. Udo Jürgens appears to have been very popular in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. Which one would you expect to see mentioned in US sources, including a forum called Pilots of America? Maybe Pilots of Austria is talking about Udo.

oooooh, named one of the 100 best singers by Rolling Stone.

:goofy:

Jürgens was the Frank Sinatra / Tony Bennett / Steve Lawrence of the German language, still performing and still very popular until just before his death. Matt Monro's 1963 hit Walk Away borrowed the melody of the Jürgens song Warum Nur Warum, with new English-language lyrics.

Oh, and it is a generational thing. People from one generation listen to different music and musicians than those from the next. I doubt I know even a single artist on the top ten right now.

Edit. Just looked. I recognize a couple by name (they get into the news) but haven't heard the song or have a clue what they sound like.

If you have never heard of Joe Cocker, you need to get out of Arkansas more. As for Udo Jürgens, I saw his birthday special a few weeks ago on Bassenheim.

Udo Juergens - He wrote more than 800 songs and sold over 100 million records. Quite a few of hits were re-written and sung by American artists. He was also a social critic with songs like "Greek Wine" written as social protest.

Graueradler is 74. I did spend about 10 years living and working in Germany. With my personality, I felt very much more at home with the German culture than with the British culture.

Indeed joe cocker was big news! Another is joe brown. ( the beetles opened for him at one time) he's very large in England even now at around 70 yrs. excellent musician .

I find it weird that folks think Cocker's cover of the Beatles is his best work. He was a rocker and did a lot of other stuff.

Most definitely, but that is a Traffic cover as well. I'm not sure if Joe ever actually wrote a song, but a lot of his covers are better than the originals, he was an excellent performer. I still remember when Belushi did him on SNL when he was on, that was funny. I saw him a couple times live in small venues, really good show each time.

One thing about Joe, you know he was going to give you all he had every time he performed, very much like Janis Joplin. Both those two absolutely could sing the **** out of a song like few others could.

That's the difference between a good singer and a great singer, a great singer makes you feel all of it, Joe put everything he had into every song. Anne Lennox is another one of those great voices and performers.

Yeah knew it was Traffic, just an example of how he went out on stage and performed. Always a good performance with Joe.

Incredible takeoff of Joe by Belushi on SNL back in the 70s

I don't care how old you are, if you don't know who Cocker is, you suck. He spans generations as many of the great one do. Beatles, Stones, Janis, Grace, Zepplin, Chicago, Aerosmith, Michael, Elvis, CCR, Skynyrd, etc. If you dont know these, young or old, you should lose your right to vote.
