The Air Force is telling me I need to leave Alaska next January... I have orders in hand for Knob Noster, Missouri... Looking forward to getting back into lower 48"America" flying as we call it... Anyone near or in Missouri???

Condolences! :)

Yeah, there are a few of us here.

Actually, the Knob Noster area isn't too bad...for Missouri. You have Warrensburg immediately to the west (college town, a bit more to do than the "normal" MO small town, more cultured and with people who can actually think) and you're an easy drive to KC if/when you need the amenities of a bigger city.

Columbia is a great town too and probably 1.5 hours or less.

I will miss this state. Alaska has its pros/cons...But being a young 21 year old... Theres nothing to do, now this "College town..." Now We're talking ;)

Are there any EAA chapters nearby or CAP flying sq's?

There are chapters of Extremely Ancient Aviators everywhere.

Lees Summit, SE of KC has a great (large and active) EAA chapter. Not sure about any closer EAA chapters or about any CAP flying. I'm catty-corner across the state, get over there occasionally but am not intimately familiar with all the small airports in that area.

You're 21...interested in college towns? MU is at Columbia. Parson me for a second while I go buy stock in Goodyear. :)

 ....

Hadn't heard that one before. Of course, that describes every club at every airport that I've ever been to, EAA or otherwise.

Yea, that describes a number of the chapters. But the one that meets at 4M3 is just "middle aged"...

Fly south to Arkansas. I don't know much about Mo concerning flying, but Arkansas is a different story. VERY active RV crowd..

I really need to log Multi time... I did a good job getting 300 hours tailwheel time, now I need something usefull in the commercial world! Unless anyone knows of a DC-3 outfit looking for a tailwheel pilot :)

Around Little Rock, the C130's line up like an aerial wagon trains. I can't help with that one, but you might have the air force connections ...

Boy, ain't that the truth. It's like watching a herd of elephants cross a savannah. If you see one...you better be looking around 'cause it's likely not the only one.

Yea.. Seams like they issue RVs to anyone who has applied for an AARP card and has a PPl here. They are everywhere.

You'll enjoy Knob Knoster. A good group of people there. You'll be flying out of Warrensburg, which as someone mentioned has a medium-sized college. The college has a good aviation program so you'll always find some kids hanging around the airport.

I really do think you'll enjoy it here in mid-Missouri.

Good way to build hours... If you know of anyone with a a tail wheel, I'm your guy ;) especially super cubs and Citabrias

Sweet. I wish I could pack my bags tonight! Do you know of any seaplane basins that rent or instruct?

Fly to VIH, take the loaner car into Rolla, go here: http://asliceofpie.info/

Went to grad school at UMR, still fly back a couple of times a year. Just for the pie.

(They have a Made Rite, too, which is great for lunch.)

Holy sweet mother of PIE! That place looks incredible... All I see is... "Diabetes" Will add this to the list.

And like I said, my son Eric goes to Mizzou, which is in Columbia. He said he was glad you were going to he stationed in MO and would love to go flying with you. He enjoyed meeting you and having lunch at OSH.

BTW, the kid had more pictures of him with blondes on his FB page than the Swedish national bikini whatever team. I'm sure he could introduce you. :D

And for more yet, go down to Missouri State at Springfield! They have a wonderful teaching program and thus have an ample supply of young women.

When I got my two year degree at a JuCo I was granted a pretty sizable scholarship to both Rolla and SMS (Missouri State was Southwest Missouri State back then) so I toured both campuses.

In 1980 Rolla had 16 women on campus.

SMS had 20,000 kids on campus and the ratio was over 2/1 women to men.

I decided right there that I didn't need an engineering degree that damned bad! :goofy:

Never once have I regretted that decision. :)

Of course, it did take me four years to get through my last two years. But still...

Never once have I regretted that decision. :)

Lived in mid-Misery for about 10 years. Learned to fly at Boonville (VER) from two retired AF guys, one who flew fixed and rotary and one who flew C130s then had a career with TWA.

Sunday runs down to Gastons are a possibility.

There's an aircraft salvage yard at Bates City (2M1 - gravel strip) just east of KC. Fun place to poke around. Higginsville (HIG) has a good avionics shop.

Lee C Fine (AIZ) used to have a car available. It's fun to drive the strip at Bagnell Dam at the lake if you haven't been before.

Work up a big appetite and fly to Sikeston (SIK) and have Lambert's Cafe shuttle you from the field to the front of the dining line. They have a location in Ozark which is a lot closer but not sure if there's an airport close by or if they will pick up or not.

And just for fun, fly into the downtown Springfield airport (3DW). Just watch out for that big-ass TV tower near the runway.

I grew up in Scott City. Lambert's used to be awesome. I ate there a few months ago, and I've had better cafeteria food. The rolls (the rolls!) were awful.

It was a dingy, dimly lit, sad little version of what used to be an incredible "dining experience".

I was born and raised in the (Kennett) Missouri Bootheel. Fortunately, I escaped at 18 via the US a Army. My sister has lived in Sikeston since 1977 and my mom lived there for five years so I've been there a great deal. IMHO Lambert's is wildly overrated. The food is adequate and they give you way too much. Rarely go there now. I will my up to TKX (hometown)for some awesome BBQ with old friends at Bill's BBQ.

University of central Missouri formerly Cmsu used to tow gliders with a helio courier but may have changed up tows since.

What? No ladies in Alaska? When I lived in Alaska, there was a pretty lady behind every tree.

Of course I lived in northwest Alaska, on the tundra.

Now we're talking! Now I can't wait to leave Alaska... Someone mention pretty girls behind every tree... I tried looking, didn't seem to have any luck... Must be hibernation early!

I know a few bush operators fly Helio Curriers... I'll tell you what, those things are insane! Load then full of people and watch it takeoff and land like a super cub! The thins I'd do to get my hands on one ;)

Yes they did, but it was over kill for the mission. It was WAY too expensive to operate for what they were using it for.

That's just like Wyoming....and there's not one GD tree within 25 miles of the projects I work on....sage brush and greasewood are not trees no matter how tall they get

They're a great airplane, but for what a J-3 can do towing gliders.... It makes things more affordable... Unless you want an airplane that can bring a glider to altitude in 1/3 the time a J-3 would... not cost effective.
