Moving To California

Jerry Brown was a hard line Marxist by his own admission. But he was somewhat intelligent and realized that he did have to tolerate private industry in order to preserve and further the State's agenda. The thing with Gavin Newsom is that people mistake charisma, good looks and success with intelligence and competence, and he is neither. He's part of the same Nancy Pelosi/George Soros political machine that Jerry Brown was but I don't think even he himself understands his own political roots. He's destroyed more lives and businesses during the covid reaction than any wildfire or earthquake ever will.
George Soros is blamed for everything. Is he the chief of the Illuminati or something?

I left Colorado. Colorado is a very beautiful state, at least the western half. But, the government corruption, traffic, liberalism, is over the top. Read the Aspen paper on any given day and it will have at least a couple of articles that will leave you shaking your head. There are a lot of people there that want full blown communism, with people begging for socialism every day. Steal from the rich and give to the poor, its everywhere in western Colorado. I loved the mountains, excellent whitewater rafting, world class fishing, world class skiing, excellent hunting (not anymore), great weather, and great flying opportunities. Moderate income tax, but high sales tax, high vehicle registration fees, too many people, too much traffic, too many people expecting to have everything without working for it. I'll never go back.
This, but minus the crazy. I left because it was too crowded & expensive, and it just wasn't the same place it was where I grew up.

This state is getting stupid. Trying to pass regulations to prevent self defense, and trying to know every damn thing about you. Need to get out.

Might one surmise that you have owned the house you live in for a very long time and are armed?

I think a lot of people who grew up east of the Rockies think California is all surfers and hippies. I can show you a lot of places, especially in the desert and Central and San Joaquin Valleys, that are every bit as redneck as Georgia.

Yeah. I have lived in Lemoore and Palmdale. I get the valley/desert thing. I’ve also lived in San Diego, Santa Barbara and Wrightwood.

No doubt. Rednecks are ubiquitous. They fight our wars. They build our cities. They clean out our septic tanks. They possess a certain simple common sense that many currently lack. They have their issues but I love them. Unfortunately, there are a lot of places where they are outnumbered.

Define redneck. I may unknowingly be one. I had to look ubiquitous up. Do most rednecks already know what that means?

Define redneck
The nicest people I've met have been in 'redneck' areas. There's a certain 'face value' hard work honesty. You know where you stand, it's easy to get things done.

people are leaving
True, and more people should tbh. Maybe that will send a message and bring the housing pricing down. We were at an open house this past weekend, $750K for 1,300 sf and it was in absolute derelict shape next to a highway under power lines. It went pending in 15 days for above ask. It's insanity. The brokers couldn't even be bothered to do 15 minutes of wiping counter tops down. Crazy part it, the state will give you up to 20% of the downpayment if you earn less than $211K.. the politicians in this state really are losing their minds. But people have also become desensitized to the idea of spending half, or more, of their income on housing costs

You can take the person out of California, but can you take the California out of the person?
Ruin one place, move along to another place to ruin in. Rinse and repeat.
You guys aren't wrong, you see it happen everywhere, even on a national scale, people leave country X because they trashed it and go to country Y and presumably trash it. But there are two types of people who leave. Some assimilate to their new home. Others do not. I should hope if people are leaving for political reasons they aren't bringing their crap politics with them.. now those leaving to live out their #Insta life somewhere that's cheaper that's another story. But that speaks more to generational culture shift than any state specific issue

A rural white laborer of limited education. Not to be confused with poor white trash or good ol’ boy.
Apparently, there are also such a thing as black rednecks. I am not going to argue with Tom Sowell as I admire his intellect

The great state of Tennessee welcomes you!

1% is "droves"? Drive around the rust belt or Detroit and you'll see what happens when actual droves leave.

Wait until reparations start and every taxpayer they’re counting on to pay the bill says “screw that” and bugs out.

This is why real Texans are nervous. You can take the person out of California, but can you take the California out of the person?
My neighbor moved here from LA. For a long time, I assumed he was "California," and it took many conversations, being less and less subtle, for me to take conclude that he got the f out of there for the same reasons I would have.

A political refugee then. As opposed to an economic refugee.

Serious question, how is the dawn patrol or after work surf session in Tennessee? LOL.

While I can only provide my experience, I'm not aware of anyone I work with being from california (disclaimer, that I have some degree of non-work conversations with). In my network of friends, well less than 50% are from California.

All this politics talk, the only time I hear about politics is on POA, Lyft ride to/from Hartzfield-Jackson, and the weekly call with my parents. Have you all considered a hobby to take your mind off politics? Maybe try General Aviation?

well, with all the new construction here in FL....and all the California plates I see in the driveways of those new houses, I'm hopeful that in a few years there will be a massive reset politically out there. What little I know about the place.... all the positives listed here in this thread, mostly to do with climate and topography...I think I'd love it out there...but no way no how in the current political landscape (taxes, cost of living, regulations, etc..)

When I was in Paris, you’d routinely see cars with California plates too. :D

Why limit myself? I am fully capable of doing both. And doing both well.

Can you still get the 20% down payment if you’re unemployed?

Income tax in California is what? like 13%?
Politics there sucks, at least if you believe in anything like the constitution. Gun laws there suck.
You might like Florida, which only has income tax on corporations, and just passed permitless concealed carry. Unfortunately, respect for the First Amendment has gone down the tubes there.

Damn. Jeff didn’t even cross my mind when I asked that. I’m gonna blame it on not enough coffee yet.

Your mental abilities appear to be impaired. You might want to delay your California decision until you’re once again in your right mind.

(Pun intended.)

Gotta love those stereotypes!

lol I knew prop 13 would pop up in due time. The usual suspects indeed know what side their bread is buttered on. This whole weather/climate zone discussion is a canard. Watch what people do/behave, not what banalities they distract with. If weather was such a life-transforming need, why would prop 13 be an inflection point? Don't answer that I'm being rhetorical. In fairness to CA, similar belly-aching is starting to take shape in Texas, a state that cannot afford that proposition due to its lack of income tax, and a political third rail to amend that.

But people have also become desensitized to the idea of spending half, or more, of their income on housing costs

That's the part that troubles me, and makes me feel like a foreigner in my own Country, especially as one who eschews the practice, at my social circle expense. I even had one chucklehead imply to my wife in private I was incurring spousal/child neglect for undershooting housing as a function of our income! That's the upper middle class for ya. Though in fairness to them, the lower middle class renters (who would never self-report as lower middle, nobody does in this Country) that populate my street probably don't want to own here either, merely forced to rent until they make it like in some 8-mile version of whatever Horatio Alger mythology they wake up in the morning with. So perhaps housing-snobbery is an American trait writ large, and not a class feature like I've previously held.

As it has in a number of other places when you don't go along with certain viewpoints. But hey if you want to talk sex with a 5 year old that's not yours have at it.

If you’ve LIVED there and have an opinion, then fine. If you’ve VISITED there and have an opinion of what it’s like to LIVE there, it’s no more relevant than my opinion of living in MS, AL, or LA (OK - for the latter, I was born there, lived there before kindergarten, and have visited family there often but I know that’s not the same experience as living there as an adult). If you’ve done neither, it’s no different than how North Koreans speak about living in the US of A: heavily based on propaganda.

Except that certain things I own would be illegal there, and while I would be allowed to bring them with me, replacing them would be impossible. I don't need to have lived there to know that.

Yeah. Prop 13, which seemed like such a good idea at the time, 1978, has reared its ugly head. Two identical houses next door to each other can have tax bills thousands of dollars apart. They are cracking into it a little now though. Just recently they did away with being able to pass the tax basis value through to heirs. Maybe someday they will count the beans and find out the number of voters who benefit from it will not be a big enough bloc to sway an election. Then, it will probably be ‘proped’ out.
