Well, here's a feel-good story for you folks.
My parents have had some wild ducks take up residence at their pond. Unfortunately, recently mama duck broke her lower beak, right at the root. Today, mama duck had gotten so weak from being unable to eat or drink that she walked right up to my mom (who's been trying to help her for days).

And Mom giving mama duck some much-needed water:
They're off to the emergency vet now to see what can be done about repairing mama duck's beak.
