The National Association of Air Traffic Specialists (representing FSS specialists) is using the ADIZ indcident to make some political points about the recent decision to outsource FSS functions:

http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=47351:
Imagine the person checking your luggage is a federal employee and the person giving instructions to the pilot is not. This is where the FAA is leading the nation's aviation community. When this happens we can all expect to see more of these stories of uninformed pilots violating airspace across the nation. This abandonment of Flight Service is the wrong direction if the intent is to make the skies safer.

I caught the tail end of an interview with a Congressmen on the Homeland Defense Committee on Fox News. From the very little I saw/heard, there is a new Homeland Security Bill in the House and they were showing video clips of the Smoketown plane at FDK. There seemed to be making a correlation between the C-150 airspace violation and more regulations or restrictions. Yes, my blood pressure went up. Nothing on AOPA yet, but I'll send them a note to get the scoop.

A freind of mine told me about this, and it's also noted in a posting on the dcpilots board/maillist. At a meeting at JYO last month, the FAA and DHS stated that they're looking at resurrecting the Enhanced Class B, at least around the Washington area. That would be disasterous for General Aviation.

I can only imagine that the pressure becomes much, much greater for the FAA to do something like ECB. And Potomac Tracon, which is less than treading water with the ADIZ, will probably be totally unable to handle the traffic. Guess who loses.

Here's the link to the dcpilots article (it predates this incident):

License revocation is much too kind for what ought to happen to this guy if Enhanced Class B gets resurrected.

Does "Enhanced Class B" mean the entire ADIZ becomes Class Bravo?

Yes (shudder) and more: they are proposing to take the entire ADIZ to the ground...as "B".

You mean Class B, don't you, Bruce?

The way I read it, you will require a specific clearance to enter the ADIZ. Probably a flight plan, too. IOW, the whole area, surface to 18,000, becomes a Class B.

Ben, Chuck, here's your incentive to finish that instrument rating!!!

what will happen to the folks at JYO? you'll only be able to fly instrument then? $%^&*(^

Making the airspace around JYO into a Bravo wouldn't mean you can't fly VFR - it will just mean you're under ATC control at all times and slow things down some.

It will also do absolutely nothing to prevent what happened last week from happening again. Make the airspace as restricted as you want, Pilot Mr. Goober Yokel like our buddy from last week won't be affected - he'll still take off w/o briefing, notams or charts and get lost.
