Winchester — A pilot coasted to an emergency landing about 1,800 feet off the Winchester Regional Airport runway on Thursday.

Pilot Patrick O’Connor Whitehead, 37, was not hurt, and his Mooney M-18 “Mite” single-person plane was undamaged, said Virginia State Police Sgt. James D. Stump.

“He was essentially doing a test flight for the aircraft,” Stump said. “Upon takeoff, the plane went into an idle mode and he didn’t have any power. Upon further investigation of the plane, it was found that the throttle cable had broken.”

Glad he and the plane are OK. I'd love to have a chance to fly a Mite.
