I'll skip how I got there and just describe where I am. For a CCTV system, I have a composite video signal coming out of the wall from elsewhere in the building on a coax. The coax has an RCA Composite video adapter screwed onto the end of it which used to plug into the back of the now failed monitor.

I have a new monitor intended to replace it which has VGA and HDMI inputs only.

What are the possibilities for getting the signal coming out of the wall into the monitor in a useable fashion?

I have found composite to VGA adapters on the internet for under $10 and converters for more like $50. Does this need a "converter" or will an "adapter" do? One seems to involve some circuitry and the other seems to be just wires connecting various types of connectors.

You're going to need some sort of converter. It's not simply a matter of mapping pins as an "adapter" implies. The only use of the cheap adapters is for a signal source (say a PC video card) which is capable of outputting a TV signal through certain pins on the VGA cable. The adapter pulls that signal out and sends it off on the RCA cables. This is sometimes the case with laptops, where they combine multiple functions into a single port.

I'm not aware of any straight adapters designed to work the other way (composite to VGA) nor does it seem possible to me.

You'll need something like: http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-Composite-Video-Adapter-Converter/dp/B001SJDESC
