Midwest Lunch today??

I didn't know KDPA had a restaurant, or we you going up to Rt 64?

Okay, so we're set for KSBM - Sheboygan, on Monday, Jan. 18th (Martin Luther King Jr Day). We can figure out a time later.

Hmmm, should we make sure the restaurant is open that day or are they just always open?
I think the restaurant at KDPA is the Jet Room or something like that. It's in the main terminal building, and not open on weekends. Go figure.

Scott said he isn't too keen on KSBM (just because he's been there a lot recently; it is a GOOD restaurant!) I'm game for something else, especially if it will allow others to attend. Maybe Indiana? There are a few places over there. I've booked the plane already.

Naah, the Jet Room is at KMSN.

The only other really good airport restaurant in the Midwest that I've been to is Pilot Pete's at 06C, but that won't even warm up the oil for you guys.

I really miss Vince's at Muncie and Runway 47 at Morris. :frown2:

Didn't the restaurant at Muncie's reopen as something else? Or did that one close too?

Some of us have to work on Monday.

Where did we finally decide to go? Just double checking as I need to go buy maps!

No decision yet, but I'm pretty sure it'll be on the Chicago sectional.

What was that place near the Strongbow Inn we talked about before? Scott? Otherwise, I'm happy with SBM.

Not sure if I recall what that was. If all we can come up with is SBM I can deal with that.
Well, there are certainly a lot I can think of in WI, but I thought we were trying to go towards IN. Maybe Lansing? There's an Irish place there, IIRC. Or KEYE by Indianapolis?

I'm probably out for Monday, *unless* we do it at KSBM and someone can pick me up at KFDL. I'm delivering up there Monday morning now, and it won't be a sure thing 'til the day of. :(

KFDL? Not found. Do you mean KFLD?We could probably do that. The question is whether we're doing KSBM! (And whether we have good weather!)

Not that I have an airplane to meet youse guys, but I'm kinda surprised that no one has suggested the air zoo at AZO - not so much for the food, but they currently aren't charging anything for general admission - so you could spend some time wandering around all the displays for free... (They do charge for the rides).

Just let me know by tomorrow morning. Chicago sectional is okay if I'm VFR but I need other charts for IFR.

Yes, I meant KFLD. Whoever picked that identifier for Fond du Lac should be shot. :mad2:

But, I won't know for sure that I can even do that until Monday. :nonod:

Okay, someone needs to make the call. KSBM it is, around noon. Who's in?

Damn, woke up this morning with a sore throat and heavy chest conjestion, slight fever. I'll have to play by ear.

I'm hoping to though.

CANCEL? Re: Midwest Lunch today??

Definitely an IFR flight. Low ceilings forecast in TAFs. (Too early for AF for period, but all this is widespread.) Freezing at surface. Looks as if there may be a low inversion over N. IL, and there may be a chance of above-freezing temps at 3000'. The mist will be low, so we may pick up some trace icing there. I didn't see any obvious VFR bolt-holes in the area. There's an ILS at SGM with mins at 297'. My home airport has mins at 550', though, and Galt is 605'. I'm leaning towards cancelling. (I want to make the call in the next couple of hours, because I don't want the FBO to have to go through the hassle of moving a bunch of planes around in the hangar if I'm not going.)

Discuss! :)

I looked this morning as well and figured it is a long shot. I would love to get up and shoot some approaches but getting into my home airport then would be a real crap shoot.

Gaah! And here I was just going to say "Hey, I can make it if Grant can pick me up at FLD for sure!" I'm delivering in Fondy tomorrow morning, then I pick up in Waupaca (PCZ) any time before 6 PM and head to Cedar Falls, IA for the next morning. So, I've got time.

Stupid weather. :(

Scott and I just talked, and we are planning to scrub the flight and meet at the restaurant in the terminal at DuPage (KDPA). So Barry, if you're feeling well enough to make it to the airport, please join us! Any others in the Chicago area, the more the merrier! (Sorry, Kent!)

I'll play it by ear. Feeling a little better but the congestion has settled into the chest.

I agree with cancelling. This freezing fog/mist is a pain.

What time are you meeting?

Meeting at noon (or thereabouts). I'll probably stop by IAA, either before or after, and re-take my expired Commercial Knowledge Exam.

Leslie recommends "cowboy tea" (boiled sliced lemons with honey) for the congestion.

The Iced trees from the freezing fog is beautiful this morning.
Yes. We saw it yesterday, and noticed that it was mostly on only one side of the trees. The METARs and TAFs make me glad we're not doing the flight today, because we may not be able to get back in to the home airport.

We saw it yesterday morning too, on the way to Ann Arbor for a hike. Wind was perfectly calm, so the ice was uniformly distributed. But it didn't last long, and within a half hour or so had started to melt.

One of our hikers said that another word for it is "hoarfrost". I've heard the word before but wasn't sure if it was the same thing.

Any thoughts on MKG for a lunch destination?

I know it's in Ed's back yard but I'm looking for somewhere this side of Lake Michigan.

You know, I've never eaten at MKG.

Edit: at KMKG. I know a certain DT would chime in and say there is not restaurant at the Muskegon VOR.

KMKG, I have. Not terrible, but really not worth flying for. There's a Big Boy across the street from KLDM that's decent and a nice flight. It's still Big Boy though.

For Ray and others, try 61D (plainwell, mi). Nice place and pretty good food. For Ed and I it's quicker to drive there than fly.

I've done both. I thought the Brownstone was pretty good, but then I was pretty starved. It was on my long solo XC as a student pilot, and I'd been flying since before noon. :D

I've heard nothing but good about that one and will make it a point to get there sometime this year.

Of course, if you want somewhere that's equally out of the way for everyone, we could always meet at KMCD (in season, of course).

There are some good restaurants within a few minutes of KTVC.

Ditto KMBS... the Riverside Restaurant in Freeland is pretty good.

Well, we did a meetup at the Kitty's Hawk Cafe. Soup, sandwich sort of place. Nothing pretentious, but good. Definitely not a day for flying if you want to be sure to get in. It was Barry, Scott, Karen, Leslie and me.

When we were done, I took (and passed) the commercial knowledge exam. Now I need to actually do flight!

I wish I could stop and eat at one of them some time. If I am up at KTVC I usually only have time for a box nasty from the chow hall on the CG air-sta and then back into the plane for the flight home.
