Mid-air two down NW of KDVT

I thought those TransPac trainers had ADS-B.....?

Were they not looking at the screen....? (Not to make light of this, just curious)

Is there even any decent ADS-B coverage around DVT? There is no radar there with all of the mountains.

'Good radar coverage around there but that's outside DVT's Class D. I've asked tower for traffic when I've been returning to DVT and they can always point out who I should be looking for... pretty sure that whole mode C veil area is covered and includes TCAS/TIS/TAS info.

Last time I went in there was 2 years ago. Not sure if anything has improved, but DVT had no radar of their own - just a feed from the Phoenix TRACON radar and in most areas you needed to be above TPA for them to pick you up due to the surrounding mountains.

It gets pretty busy out there, here's a picture I took not too long ago. Look at all those guys!

BTW there is TIS coverage.

Nice picture at 2020 RPM and 6.3gph hard to beat those numbers. BTW it appears that you had close traffic ahead at same altitude. Did you get a voice warning or a red icon?

Take one at Casa Grand when you're over the VOR

I think that's 6.3gph per side...

The one right next to me is a TIS ghost.
BTW that's not a VOR, I just had the G1000 set to show compass rose around my aircraft.

That's right, 6.3gph per side.

But please, but please, let's not change the thread of somebody's midair to my fuel burn rate.

I hope someone was looking outside when you took that... ;) :D

I don't remember exactly what was happening when I took that picture. But usually when I take such pictures I just point the camera and snap the pic without actually looking at the camera.

Not sure how accurate this is, but heard on another pro pilot forum that in one of the aircraft was Trans Pac's Chief CFI/head of hiring giving a checkout to a new CFI.

Serious question: How many fatals is Trans PAC averaging per year??? Seems like the last few years they have had at least 2 fatal accidents per year.

That used to freak me out when I first started flying the G1000! It still gets my attention when I get the occasional "traffic" call right after takeoff, climbing to pattern altitude:hairraise:. (sure keeps me on my toes!)

It seems to happen more at certain airports than others. It's a ghost of my own radar return (i think).
I need a diamond shaped Skyhawk:rofl:

Yeah, same.

Was reading on another forum....apparently this makes 10 dead from TransPac since 2009. How in the hell is that place still in business? How are they even able to find an underwriter that will cover them at any price?

I mean really....here is just one of their fatals:

Word on the street is the CFI who signed her off for that flight is still working there. Unbelievable.

With the stink over Sheble and Eddie Lane in the last couple years....it blows me away that TransPac is business as usual.

Very sad. My best wishes go to all of the families.

The key here is not the number of fatals, but the fatal ratio. If they teach 10,000 students each year, it's inevitable to get a couple of fatals. Same goes with any activity. Did you know that despite killing the largest number of astronauts among any space transport system, Space Shuttle was the safest by any measure you might reasonably want? LOC per flight, death per person, anything. Somehow it was lost in all the hype of Columbia and Challenger.

I do not have the numbers for TransPac's graduations per year or flight hours, do you?

Sounds like my long XC, when the Approach said "you were the first to come through the pass today". Students are stupid like that.

In any case, this midair was a tragedy that did not have to happen when taken in specific. There's always a chain of events that could be broken, if only we stayed more vigilant, aviated better. Statistically, though, it's different.

So those numbers are okay as long as they pass enough people along the way??? That seems to be what you are implying.

We aren't talking about expected combat losses of B-17 crews over Germany. We are talking about a pi$$ poor flight school with a VERY dubious reputation.

9 out of 10K for an activity that is inherently dangerous actually sounds pretty darn good. How does it compare to the national average? The only way to eliminate risk from aviation is to stop flying.

That place is insanely busy. They are going to have some accidents.

In regards to the insurance, the students are pretty much all Chinese. I expect there are not many wrongful death lawsuits.
