Mid-Air near KLMO (Longmont, CO)

Frequently it's busy airspace with all the training out of BJC, BDU, LMO, EIK, FNL, GXY, etc...

A very busy, congested area, to be sure. Wife just paged me out of a meeting with "You didn't go flying today, did you?"

I think I've seen the aircraft that ended up right next to the airport (with the female surviving pilot) before. I'm digging through photos but I think that's a nice 180.

White with yellow wingtips, tail number ending in Charlie.

No media has shown the other aircraft yet. It must be too gruesome.

There was a picture of the other aircraft up briefly (correction: the picture is still up on the home page of the Denver Post). Looked like it went in pretty much vertical. Basically it showed the empennage setting on a pile of aluminum.

Thank god you three have chimed in... Is there any more Colo POa'ers in the area ?

Sad deal ..:sad::sad::sad:

The um... iPad version hasn't caught up yet I guess...

Video of both now up on KDVR's page. Clark's right... Straight in.

The empennage is balanced on top of a pile of burnt metal in a ditch. Ouch.

If I had to guess, I'd say Skyhawk. White with grey.

I didn't fly today. But I have several friends who fly out of LMO. No news either way yet.

Crap. There was a CFI in the second aircraft. Two confirmed fatalities now. And a much higher likelihood that one of us knew someone...

Very sad, my heart goes out to the surviving family members for their loss.

Lets be carefull out there. ;)

I am just starting out with my PPL training, and mid airs are something I never even thought could be an issue. How common are mid airs? How common are they at towered airports. Man, nothing scary in my opinion.

TOO common...:yesnod::sad:

My single biggest fear. Everything else I feel like I can mitigate. I was descending for landing, on FF and a Cessna popped up from under my wing. we got REAL close, as in we looked each other in the eyes and I read his N-Number close. I don't think there was any way we could have seen each other given the terrain and the high wing/low wing issue. He didn't have his transponder on and ATC couldn't see him even after I reported the traffic.

Clerk at Apple Store today said his dad flies for United, and they live at KEIK and know Bev.

Such a small world. Nice kid.

Two experienced CFI pilots collided with each other. This gives you an idea that no matter how good of a pilot you are it can still happens to you. This is why having some form of traffic alert system TAS can keep you from having this experience.

It is sad. I am surprised it does not happen more often. I am at KJKA a lot. I am always hoping for bad weather, ceilings below 1000 feet. On a pretty day it is like flys on road kill. At times I find it easier to depart VFR and get above 10,000 ASAP then pick up the clearance. They are several airports in that area with a mix of military and gobs of VFR pilots going in every direction and most talking to know one. Even though I have traffic, it seems better to just make a dash for altitude and hope for the best. It is a little scary at times. Ya'll do be careful out there.

very sad RIP!

I went up to the practice area on my last flight just to do some airwork. It was a nice weekday, I got flight following from the nearby class C controller but honest to god, there were so many other planes up all I could concentrate on was avioding them. Then I got a "traffic alert, cessna xxx, traffic x o'clock x miles advise immediate turn south!":yikes:

I complied and acknowledged. Soon after, I decided to just go home since I had to get ready for work. Wasn't worth the aggrivation and didn't have the time to go somewhere else or climb another 2-3 thousand feet.

Next time, I'll just climb up higher before starting my practice because it seems like everyone likes 3000 feet around here for some reason:dunno:
