Recent report of a mid air collision near Long Beach, Calif.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2009/05/midair-collision.html

"Gregor said one of the planes was believed to be a four-seat, single-engine Cessna 172, and the other a twin-engine Cessna 310, which can carry six people."

It was later confirmed that a CFI and a student pilot were onboard the C172.

If I remember correctly, the mid-air was witnessed by another pilot in the area. He was circling the site for a while talking to coast guard directing them to the 2 debris fields.

This is a busy practice area because it's over water and has a few ships & landmarks for ground ref practice. Doesn't help much that the way to Catalina goes through the practice area.
