Sometime this weekend as we enjoy BBQ, boating, family and friends attend a parade, cemetary service, or just take a minute to remember those who gave their lives defending our country, and their commarades in arms.

A lot of men and women made the ultimate sacrifice so we may enjoy our freedom.

Veterans Day is to honor our veterans, Memorial Day is to remember those who did not make is home alive.

Amen, brother.

The Feel

We will never forget the familiar feel of:
Charging handles being pulled back while leaving the wire. Looking down at the national guard soldiers faces of empathy because we go out 2-3x a day and they have not left the fob once.
Burning of CLP on my face when firing the 249 or 240 on air guard.
Taking one glove off to tear open the lemon pound cake to eat with my hand
Our first shower in over a month in cold water and government issued soap and body wash
Smells of the city while on patrol:: Trash, burning plastic, ****, dust, cooking food.
Watching tracer rounds shoot into the sky on new year's 2005 with an uneasy calmness.
Brain, bone and blood sting face after the frag is thrown into a room yet to be cleared
Warm blood pours like maple syrup spilling into my lap while he looks up at me for reassruance.
Bangs and pops just like training on the range-- except now it's people falling to the left and right from trigger pulls.
Or the smell of her letters that came in the mail...for a while.
Sharing a cigarette in the dark outside in the cement bunkers in the middle of the night by our tent when mortars landed on base.
Landing on u.s. soil and still not feeling safe
Looks of uncertainty when we were released and the guys went back home to their families.
Drunken phone calls from men asking me why, _____ couldnt come back w/ us.
But we also will never forget: the friendships, feeling of having my back, truly watched, a guy giving you his last anything, when we hardly had anything.
All these memories are the burden and reward for being a combat veteran.
They are burned into the deepest part of our brains forever--We Will Never Forget
Live to honor our fallen-Enjoy each moment of our lives because they can not.
Do not let our society be ignorant of the price paid for the truly unique liberties we Americans hold dear. Written by Pugilistic Vance
