Mechanic 'borrows' F86

Why didn't they just let him fly the damn plane in the first place. He would have kicked serious ass.

Robin Olds did something similar when he showed up at the base and saw the first jet, the P-80 for the first time.

They had a long waiting list of weeks for flight slots. So on day one Olds just put on his flight suit, strolled out past the mechanic working on the bird and hopped in. He brought it back intact and was put on the regular rotation.

The mechanic faced three charges: stealing an F-86F (valued at $217,427), causing $195.64 worth of damage to the aircraft when he hit the barrier upon landing, and flying the aircraft without proper flight orders or clearance.

Hooboy, those were the days.
