The OP article is somewhat misleading. If understand correctly, the researchers are using plant systems to large-scale manufacture recombinant viral proteins. The use of the cannabis plant is purely incidental to the cannibinoid compounds the plant produces. Scientists also use other easily grown and genetically manipulated plants like tobacco for this type of work. The final product does not include any of the natural plant materials.
