Flight School Ownership

Have any of you POA'ers ever owned a flight school? What sort of heartache would be waiting for me? Just pondering life's options.

If there's ever been a better reason to go on the wagon, I haven't heard it.

Many have made a small fortune running a flight school.

Of course, they started with a large fortune.

You're saying it's not a good idea?

If I start with a small fortune, would I make a large one?

I think the law of progression implies you would be broke. Captain Ron alludes to that in his post on your other duplicate thread, with regards to undercapitalization.

I hate to dash anyone's dreams, and clearly some have managed to do well, but usually in the context of a Part 141 school where students can get lots of gov't loans to fund very expensive training.

I'd love to know it was economically viable to put a C-150 on a grass strip somewhere and teach people to fly economically, but I think in that equation at a minimum you need a A&P involved in some way (either ownership interest or very close working relationship) to help keep costs in line.

I think often times the maintenance shop at an FBO is what keeps it afloat to help fund the training operations which, hopefully, will lead to more aircraft owners and more maintenance business.

My two-cents.
