I was just reading a article about PS Engineering's new 6000B audio panel and it mentions you can get it with or without marker beacons receiver. Are they even used any more? Is it like a ADF who's time has come and gone?

Outer Markers seem to be going away in the US. Middle and Inner Markers survive on the Cat II and Cat III runways around here.

Audio panels have been available with/without beacon receivers for decades though. The ones without receivers are less expensive and appeal to the vfr-only set. They also appeal in aircraft which have independent beacon receivers.

Yes there are less and less of them it seems, but I like em'.
Great to wake you from your stupor "hey, its time to land!", or to the newbie pax "tell me if that lights up, so I can put out the fire!".

Middle markers are still around for Cat I runways. Like KBED ILS
approaches for 11 and 29

I just wish lockmart would clean out obsolete notams. The RWY 36 MM has been OTS for the better part of the last 5 years! I'm pretty sure we've all noticed by now :)

Is there current information that shows the RWY 36 MM operational? If there is, the NOTAM is not obsolete.

Hasn't been on the IAP for years. I think it's just that noone got rid of the obsolete NOTAM.

LockMart doesn't seem to understand the concept of the published notam. Every time I call for a briefing they ask if I need "all those NOTAMs" and I tell them that I know that the ILS 18 OM and MM are decommissioned, the 14 VASI is gone, the 14 threshold is displaced, they're working on Alpha and the west ramp, etc...

We have way too damn many old NOTAMs and while I feel like LockMart is covering their butts over "liability" concerns, I think it creates a safety issue as people are less likely to pay attention to any of the NOTAMs when they have to listen to the same crap over and over again.

OBTW Pete, you're already obviously a victim of this if you think it's 36. I haven't heard a NOTAM for 36 in a long time, it's for 18. ;)

Same phenomonon that too many road signs cause.

I assume you're referring to KMSN. I don't see a NOTAM for the RWY 36 MM. I see NOTAMs for the RWY 18 OM and MM created in August 2008, and note current IAPs do not show those beacons.

I think your ire is misdirected. LockMart shouldn't be responsible for sorting NOTAMs and deciding which to keep and which to trash. Whatever organization was responsible for creating the NOTAM should be responsible for canceling it when it's no longer valid.

It's not that they're not valid, it's that they're OLD and anyone who's flown in there in the last couple of YEARS got the message already.

What has age got to do with it? NOTAMs should be carried as long as they're valid and canceled when they're no longer valid. When they're no longer valid it should be the responsibility of the organization that originated the NOTAM to cancel it, not LockMart.

No, they should become published NOTAMs if temporary, or added to the A/FD if permanent.
