...carrying President Obama just flew over our house!!! I heard the choppers and looked out my kitchen window as two CH-47s CH-46s flew over at high speed! They just departed JFK enroute to Hofstra University. Damn that was exciting!

This was the 2nd time I've seen a President fly over! The 1st was when President Reagan flew over my parent's house in the Vailsburg section of Newark. He was flying from Newark airport in Marine one, up to Seaton Hall University in South Orange, NJ.

Marine One is cool but seeing Air Force one fly in is awe inspiring. As a side note I also thought that Marine One flew with two decoys. Did you see just one helo or more in the same scheme?

Yes, when I saw Reagan, I saw three Sea Kings (if I recall) as well as the Chinooks CH-46s (Sea Knights).

This time I wasn't so lucky. By the time I heard the choppers and looked out the window, I only caught the last two Chinooks Sea Knights flying over real fast. The other choppers had already past.

I wonder do they ever put the Pres in one of the Chinooks (CH-46 Sea Knight):dunno:

That is correct. They fly in a three ship formation. Sea Kings I believe. I flew over them in the Tiger several years ago near Camp David (yes I was outside of P-40), and I heard on the Approach Frequency I was on "Marine One, cleared as filed". I saw them at my 12 about 3,000 ft beneath me, and I did fly directly overhead. I made sure I did not deviate an inch from my course and altitude. I think I was headed down to Williamsburg or somewhere for an AYA fly in.

It was pretty cool to see.

For a time it seemed difficult to be in Waco without seeing big bird.

They use CH-46s. Very similar looking to Chinooks though. Worked Marine One (H-3) on approach back in 96' and I can tell you they way they have the decoys set up even I didn't know which one had the "man."

Current POTUS only comes to TX to strip-mine big donors, mostly trial lawyers.

Just got the AOPA TFR email, he'll be back in NY on Thursday. He must love the big apple:)

Did you hit 'em with a targeting laser - that would have been fun to watch

Thanks for the correction, I thought they were CH-47s. Learn something new everyday. What's the difference between the two?

Both are Boeing Vertol amphib helicopters. Both obviously tandem rotor. The 46 is smaller, older, slower and primarily used by Marines. The 47 is newer, bigger, faster and used by the Army. Fastest helicopter we have in the Army. I can attest to its speed. While trying to follow one in an H-60 during an air assault he left me in his wake. If I didn't have wing tanks on I probably could've given him a run for his money. :)

Do the Marines use CH 47's? I think the Navy only uses CH 46's and the Army only uses CH 47's.

I've ridden in S***thooks lots of times. Even have a couple jumps out the back.

Oh ok. Thanks. Impressive machines!
Hope I'm lucky enough to see them returning to JFK tonight after the debate!

Ch-46 and high speed does not equate.

I saw Carter once, but it was well after his presidency, and he was riding in a Chevy pickup.

Seriously.

I also used to see the big bird at TSTC Waco; one time, I was on frequency and not at all far away as they arrived; a guy had been making smart-aleck comments to the Waco Approach controllers about being vectored for restricted airspace - guy said, "What, is old Bushie in town?" in a snide tone. Controller told him "stand by," and within five or so seconds, we heard, "Waco Approach, Air Force One, three thousand, gear down."

Wonder if smarty-pants got a call from the USSS?

Marine One and the boys in the CH-46s, just flew back to JFK. Didn't get a good view this time because they were at a distance from the house. I heard them and saw the beacon lights a few miles away!
Awesome!

So, from the other posts I guess they are CH-46s (I didn't realize it either). When I graduated college, Bush 43 was the graduation speaker. After we were all seated, a pair of CH-46's flew in over the stadium and landed on the practice field right next to the stadium. Then the President came out and gave his speech. Immediately after, he walked out and the helicopters took off doing an orbit of the stadium. They certainly put on a show that he was on the CH-46's. Who knows if he really was.

Side gripe -- we had a "free speech zone" for protestors set back a ways from the stadium, but plenty visible from most parking areas. And the walking procession went right by it. It was full of very colorful and loud protestors. It just seemed tacky to protest a graduation. That just bugged me.

Technically, Air Force 1 and Marine 1 are whatever respective Air Force or Marine aircraft the president happens to be aboard.

I know that. From what I read, the President currently uses two types helos. One is a Sea King.

They use different types. I've got a photo around here somewhere of the smaller helo that fits inside the C-17 when traveling. Took it at KPUB when they were staging for a TFR, ahem... Visit there.

Reminds me of the anti-war protesters I see at the Memorial Day Airshow on Jones Beach! There's a place for that kind of thing, but that's not it!
