Several times I have run my Malware program and it finds a lot of files that look something like this:
PUP.DOC...

I let the program remove the infected files and run it about once a week.

Where do theses files reside? Are these files written by a programmer?

What is the purpose of this kind of Malware? Just someone snooping about my Internet usage so I can get sent an ad?

Why would someone want to send me to a porn site? Wouldn't they rather have someone go there on purpose instead of re-directing me? I just close out the web page and move on.

Anyway, can someone take the time to explain and make sense of Malware?

Thanks,
Terry

Thanks for the reply.

I know I am naive but I am still amazed that someone would want to screw with my computer, send me ad, look at my files, etc.

So they probably come in on a "Toolbar". I wonder if they are written in HTML, Java, or VB Script?

When I write a computer program in VB 4 it issues a source code and unless you know my source code, attaching an executable file to my program is almost impossible.

How do they attach a virus or Malware to my download?

I was looking on Amazon for Malware for Dummies, as I am curious just exactly how they do this.

Thanks,
Terry

Most PUPs are gray-area stuff. Any ad-supported program could fall into the category, as could toolbars and other such "enhancements."

If they're classified as PUPs, then the antivirus publisher probably considers them to be programs that may track you for advertising purposes, but probably won't harm your computer. Chances are that they also reviewed the program and found that its EULA accurately disclosed whatever snooping or tracking the program does. They also may have come to the conclusion that the program offers sufficient functionality that some people may want, despite whatever privacy concerns the software may raise.

Most likely, however, the program is a PUP because the program's publisher's lawyers threatened to sue the antivirus company for defamation if they kept calling the program malware. So the antivirus company reclassified it as a PUP, which leaves the choice up to you.

I googled Virus, Malware, and a few other terms and got a better understanding.

Thanks,
