They've been going on for some time. The AMTSociety's competition been going on for years. Most are geared towards airline or shop level maintenance then field maintenance but can be rather interesting if your into that sort of thing. The bigger contests have major union funding which I think is also a big reason behind some of the "flashier" comps.
