Magic Carpet Ride?

While the author says that "blade placement is troubling", you do have to give credit to the builders/makers out there that are exercising their innovation skills.

A step along the way to a self-flying ultralight electric tiltrotor.

definitely. but also, even if this thing worked as is, you know people would b!tch about that kinda noise. I think they almost have to work on that at the same time, if anything like this is going to work. them soccer moms gotta watch their daytime soaps, can't be havin these things buzzing their house makin all sorts'a noise all day long!

He did a good job on the engine controller side, pretty impressive. Not easy to do if your CG is above the lift plane.
Now if only technology advanced far enough where we could have quieter motors or better battery storage/life for electric motors.

Been thinking about building a rotorcraft for several years now. I have a spare engine block in the garage and even scoped out some nice blades with sufficient thrust. But since I live in the middle of Nuevo Kalyfornya, them soccer moms (that eman mentioned) make all the rules around here and I won't be allowed to fly it. :(

Let's see, eight RC piston engines. I don't feel like doing the math right now, but the probability of failure of one engine at any given time is high, and I suspect the loss of a single engine in flight would be very bad news.

Ah yes... the dreaded 7 engine landing.....:( :)

But yes, I suspect you are right about that.
