Deb and I had the opportunity to make the 230 nm day trip to Luray, Virginia and visit the Luray Caverns. Really a great general aviation destination with an airport shuttle to the caverns and reasonable gas prices. Centuries old caverns of amazing natural beauty.

Definately one to consider as a fllying destination this summer.

Gary,

Thanks for posting the pictures. Mary and I have this on our list but haven't made it there yet. Is there ground transportation to/from the airport available?

**** just checked out Airnav. Nothing but great write ups about the service. Transportation to/from the caverns by the airport folks seems to be the norm.

I had NO idea about the caverns... but had looked at the Luray airport as I was scheduled to do a race there earlier this spring. Now, I've gotta go - race or not.
Thanks for posting this!

The airport has a complementary van service that will drop you at the Caverns and you call and they come over and pick you up. It is less than a 5 minute van ride, just over one hill from the airport. Very well organized and professional. Fuel $5.15 was not a bad deal either.

Here's a short newsletter article I wrote about the trip for our EAA 1252 newsletter.

Luray is a great way to introduce people to GA. From BWI, it is a short flight. You get to see the utility of "private flying," great service at W45 to and from the Caverns, and it can be done very comfortably in a day.

Stopped by Luray yesterday. Very friendly UNICOM!
