"Lucky" Landing for Warrior at OTIS

Being repeated on local news, Piper Warrior with stuck throttle yesterday was diverted to Otis ANG with assist from Mass State Police Air.

What a story, 90+% sensational BS. The media, with some rediculous help from a state police helicopter crewmember, made the woman's stuck throttle (open) problem into a near death experience. Besides the fact that as part of the trouper's fabulous advice (fly the Warrior at full power to a big runway, pull the mixture and land) the report made it clear that running the engine at full power was likely to cause it to overheat and seize up at any second (completely unpredictable behavior was one of the comments from the state pilot), and that the plane was going to fall from the sky the instant the engine was shut down. Neither the Warior pilot nor the experts giving her advice seemed even vaguely aware that you can control engine power with the mixture, albeit a bit erratically. Interestingly the pilot's chief concern seemed to be whether or not she'd be able to get a ride from the airport she was landing at back to the one she came from 15 miles away. Perhaps she wasn't feeling as close to dying as the talking head would have you belive.
