Were they not friendly?

Did they not have the bits you needed in stock?

Were you not entertained?

Here we go again. First Target (aptly named, apparently), now HD.

A couple of years ago I got a call from AmEx. They asked me if I'd bought some airline tickets. I said no. They said, "we have a charge on your card from Emirates Air for $41,000 and wanted to know if you made it." Ooh, that's a big negatory.

I guess the thief was operating under the concept of "go big or go home".

Wonder how far back they went? I used a card at HD maybe a year ago, but not since. I usually go to Lowes. Nicer colors.

Unfortunately these companies are managed by people who really don't care about their customers, who are only shooting for their next quarterly numbers. If they cared, they would make sure a quality CTO/CIO (depending on the company you're at) was in position and had the resources and support to secure their systems.

As it is, from my experience, you might get a CTO/CIO that knows what they're doing but lacks the support from his peers & boss, or you'll get a clueless CTO/CIO who screws everything up but has the full support of the executive team. But you will never get both.

Well, I'll tell you this. It's like being a virgin. You either are, and always have been, or you aren't anymore. Once you shop - you are in the system for-evar.

It's a bit more complex than that, but this is certainly a sticky wicket. I've done a bit of consulting in the past, on consumer/retailer security, and when I roll out my shpiel, pretty much everyone says 'wow! That's great, but how do we USE the info then?' I tell them you can have perfect security, and very, very hard utility, or you can have junk security, and very good utility. You cannot have both.

If your consumer credit info is basically one way trip, in only and never out, then you have perfect security. But - at some point, you need to have an 'out' for that info, and there's the rub. How do you support thousands of stores, with literally millions of customers online, and still maintain high security? Without ****ing off customers? And still allow them to spend freely? Not - an - easy - task, and I'm glad I'm not in that part of the biz anymore. Sure looks like a lot of big places are failing at it.
