Don't get me wrong, I have vices. Lots of vices. But none of them are cool or interesting or are going to impress the ladies. So I'm thinking about picking up a new vice, one that's cool. I considered cigars or pipes but, to be honest, I'm scared to death of cancer. Wine might be a possibility but I'm not really a wine kinda guy. I am pretty blue collar. Beers and craft beer are interesting, but I think that would involve more drinking than I really want to do. I used to do a lot of drugging and drinking when I was young but right now I don't drink it all. So I'm thinking about whiskey. I'm thinking about becoming knowledgeable and enjoying Scotch whiskey.

So on that premise, can anyone recommend something for me to get started with? I'm thinking maybe $200 a bottle tops to start out? Are single-serve bottles available in good whiskeys? Or maybe I can find a place here in South Florida where I can do a tasting? Or do bars serve high-end whiskeys?

Any other suggestions in my quest for a new vice?

I don't know why anyone beyond their teens would take up a new vice. Life is short and expensive enough as it is, and there are plenty of better things to do with time and money.

You need to get back to work and quit wasting your time posting on POA! :)

Maybe take up vaping? I went through a single malt scotch phase before. These days I don't feel like paying a premium for it. I won't drink rotgut though even. I normally drink Jameson or Bushmills (which ever is on sale at the time.)

I'm not really much of a wine person anymore either. But, I sometimes like a good sparkling wine. Not a champagne, but an actual sparkling wine with a 13%+ alcohol content. Like a good Australian sparkling shiraz. Had a couple bottles for new years.

I enjoyed reading about and sampling Scotches but being knowledgeable of good wines will be more useful. I spent a couple of years learning about wine and experimenting with food pairings and I think it is a useful knowledge to have, especially if you entertain company. It is nice to have enough knowledge to pick out the right complement for a meal.

Scotch is more of a guy thing, and it is difficult to find others who can appreciate your experience and knowledge there. I rarely drink Scotch anymore, mainly because none of my friends now appreciate it.

I've been intrigued by hookah bars. My daughter has gone to them a few times, and says it's like a cross between a coffee shop and a head shop.

Apparently they have dozens of different flavors of water-cooled smoke and vapors. Everything from bubble gum to amaretto. (Not unlike the "kiddie booze" craze that has swept through the bars.)

The only thing stopping me is the fear that it might get me smoking again. This year marks 30 years since my last cigarette, and I'd hate to screw that up.

So, my only vices remain beer, gin, and flying. :)

So I googled single malt whiskey sampler and found a few sites including the very interesting one below:

https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/c/395/single-malt-scotch-whisky-miniatures

Any suggestions on which ones to try?

If this is your first, start with Glenfiddich 18 year. Glenfiddich is the worlds most popular single malt, and 18 year is still somewhat affordable. But even Glenfiddich 12 year is a good daily drinker.

Just one word of advice - Glenfiddich has a fairly unique source of water, from the 'Robbie Dhu' springs. That spring gives it a taste that's very distinct from any other Scotch. You either love it or hate it.

I personally love it and can't stand any other Scotch. But I know other people who feel the opposite. So if you don't like Glenfiddich, try another Scotch first before writing them all off.

Understand heroin popularity and availability is on the rise :nono:

single person flash mobs are all the rage these days. please post vids of yours.

but seriously, of all the things u mentioned, wine is the only one that will impress the ladies. that is, if u can convince them you're not gay for drinking wine.

I am not gay, and I drink a lot of red wine. white wine is disgusting unless I'm on a date, then "sure, I'll have some white wine". I don't think babes are impressed with a stinky stogie or whisky, what do they care. there's a wine being sold 'round here called Carnivore, and if there is such a thing as a man's wine, to me this is it. grab urself a steak and some of this wine and enjoy. oh, and boobs for dessert.

How about massage parlors? You know, the ones that rub a little more than your back? That's a great vice. You can do the cigar and whiskey afterwards!

Oh, no cigar. Well whisky for certain.

Since you are a recently minted A&P, there's logically only one new vice to pick up.... building your own experimental airplane! You've already got the skills and knowledge.

Skydiving, you'll meet awesome people and flying the canopy should come easily to you.

I would say shooting, but you should already shoot, it's odd when you see a boy over the age of 12 who doesn't shoot or at least have a .22.

Finding a super cub project would be good to, could make a couple bucks as well.

I'm enjoying the responses and advice, keep them coming.

Let's see:

Skydiving: definitely going there. Did an unassisted first jump a few years back (well, AFF system so not entirely unassisted) and want to start my training again soon.

Vaping: to be honest, I have absolutely no interest in that.

Guns: I used to own guns and got out of them when my son was born but lately I've been considering buying one.

Hookers: I've thought about it but I don't think I want to be that guy.

Oh, BBQ: I like that one!

Someone mentioned drugs: been there, done that, gave it up 40 years ago (child of the 60's).

Learn to play craps, the most social game in the casino. The ladies will be impressed by a large chip stack and offering to explain the bets is an easy conversation starter. And when she wins, you win .

POA just had a great thread in this topic...

'I' know what a head shop is, I was making a (bad) joke.

Weightlifting, kayaking, mountain biking, kite surfing. Where you live makes a big impact on what you should pick. Something that makes you awesome, not consumption of depressants. Also the more weather independent your non flying vice the better.

Asking for life lessons on Internet discussion boards.

I think building a plane is the best option, especially since, if you pick right and build well, you can make more than you spend on it.

If you're just looking to spend money, scotch and wine are good. Balvenie Doublewood is my favorite single malt. Wine, like all kinds of reds, but mostly drink more economical stuff.

But I'm planning on building a plane soonish.

Guns are fun, but I find the hard part is keeping proficient. And then with kids, there are other obvious concerns.

So I'm thinking about picking up a new vice, one that's cool.

It sounds like you have a nice excess of time and maybe money. No problem with that, its cool. Any of us with airplanes actually must have some of the same. However I will suggest that using those resources on some of the suggested activities will not lead to a satisfying end.
Don't think me a dullard but may I suggest you consider using some of your resources in a pursuit that might help others? In every case I have done this, the reward has been much greater than anything like becoming a genius on wines or being the cool guy at the club.
Go help out at the local food pantry. Volunteer walking stray dogs at the shelter. See if you can do something for the local old folks' home. Give airplane rides to some high school kids, even lead a intro to flying course with them.
No intention of being a downer but reading the things you might be trying out, I could not help think of how much better a different path would be.

You're not being a downer or dullard. You are showing your wisdom. Thank you for the courage to voice your point of view.

LOL, don't get all serious on me now. And hey, life lessons are where you find them. Though I hardly think asking folks to recommend a good whisky constitutes much of a life lesson. Personally I think that unless you're Amish, you don't need to pick this thread apart. That is unless you're going to give up all of your little extras/luxuries in life and move to Africa. Which some people do and God bless them. I just don't think they're posting on this board. But if you're posting here from an NGO tent somewhere in the third world, I will accept your criticisms. Otherwise ... well let's just leave it at that.
