Hi Everyone

I'm an Australian who this year moved to Philadelphia, PA, with my wife. We plan to be here for a couple of years as she was offered an international promotion for her work.

Back in Australia I held a PPL and have recently done the conversion so I now hold a USA license issued by FAA (it was much easier than i expected, just had to do some paperwork).

I have never flown in the US and am interested in getting up there and learning the similarities and differences when flying in another country. I have about 110 hours experience.

Please let me know if you are somewhere near Philadelphia and willing to have along a copilot or just a coffee and chat.

Just remember that before acting as PIC in the USA, you will have to complete a flight review with a US flight instructor. Note that this is any flight instructor rated in the aircraft, and does not have to be a Designated Pilot Examiner (US term for ATO). This will include a minimum of one hour of ground training (mainly covering flight rules, which sounds like your biggest issue), and a minimum of one hour of flight training (covering whatever the instructor sees as appropriate for you, the plane you fly and the flying you do). See this guide for more on that.

That said, getting up and flying some here with a US pilot might be very useful in identifying what you have to learn to successfully complete that flight review so you can act as PIC here.

Hi Ron

Thanks for the reply, thats a good point you raise about the flight review. I will need to do that, thanks for the FAA link too, I'll have a read and contact a flight training school.

Hi Ben. Welcome to POA and the USA! Where in OZ are you from? My company started in Melbourne and we still have an office there.

Hi Greg

We are from Sydney, we came over for my wifes work (she is in the energy efficiency industry). Australia is a great place to live, we love it there and will go back one day, we got working visas to come to the US so we thought what a great opportunity. So far we have enjoyed the experience of living abroad, you get a much better feel for a place instead of just vacationing through.

I am hoping to do some flying and keen to meet some local pilots.

Hey Ben, as someone who went the opposite direction and got a CASA CPL while living in Aus, the one big difference in the rules here is there is no "Press of Weather" clause in minimum clearances. Here they make the instrument rating easy enough to get and keep that they expect you to file and fly IFR when weather gets below minimums. If you want the number of a CFI at N Philly, send me a PM and I'll give you his number. He has the best Comanche there is.

Hi Ben!

Welcome to Philadelphia and POA!

There are a few of us in the PHL area, as you've seen. We do get together every once in a while, but that is often like herding cats! I'm based out of Quakertown, a bit north, but not too far. Look forward to meeting up sometime soon!
