I've been cruising around this site for quite a while but finally decided to sign up and play. Maybe I didn't feel like I had much to contribute until I just got my private pilot cert last week...

Either way, I'm currently based in the Dayton, Ohio area and am renting from an aero club with goals to purchase a small single-engine for my wife-to-be and I to visit family and take trips whenever we can! Glad to have made it here and looking forward to learning from everyone!

Wow, you made it through your cert without posting! I think I lurked for a few months before I had to start asking bonehead questions. Good to hear from you, finally.

    Thanks for the welcome!

Looking at a Piper Cherokee 140 to 180. Enough to get the mission complete with the two of us or a shorter ride with somebody in the back.

Of those two, go with the 180... you'll quickly learn to appreciate the extra HP.

    Welcome! Congrats!

During your flight training, how useful did you find the metal landing calculator to be?

I hope we are not going to have problems James but you seem to already be taking a step with the wrong foot. What is your problem with high wings? Are you gonna be another low wing fanboy?

Wow, thanks for the warm welcome from everybody!

Hank- I wasn't there when my avatar Aubie ran around but I still have respect for my elders! ;) ( I graduated AU in 2009)

Andrew- no worries about the Sugar Bowl, and congrats to OU for beating a real team once this year! I actually lived in Moore for a few years after college and I'm looking forward to flying out that way at some point.

Mark- thanks for reminding me to delete this account... I didn't realize the bar fell on the ground allowing Bama fans in here.

Buford- no issues with the high wings but man, the low wings sure do look so much better. But really, it's more of a nostalgia and familiarity thing with them since my very first flights in a GA aircraft were Pipers 10 years ago and then my training was also done in them. Don't get me wrong, I want to gain time and experience in high wing aircraft but for now it's a personal preference.

It's OK, you can say it - low wings are better! :)

Welcome. I'm actually flying out to Dayton tonight. Let me know if you have any good tips on what to do to burn a day's worth of time tomorrow... I heard there is an aviation museum in town. Worth checking out?

If you are in Dayton, OH and DO NOT go to the USAF museum then you need to turn in your pilot privileges and walk away! It is free of charge, free parking and one of the best places on earth.

I agree, if you've never been the USAF museum everybody should put it on their list of places to visit. You'll need more than a day to see it all, but your day will certainly be filled--absolutely worth it!

There are also several other historical sites nearby involving early aviation and the Wright bros, all of which are identified in the foyer of the USAF museum.
