For the record, while not mountainous this area is certainly hilly. There are still plenty of fields to set down in if you have to, but it ain't Iowa. For those who want to look this up on a sectional the crash site is about 30nm SSW of KCAK. Zooming in on ForeFlight he came to rest somewhere in the word "kilns" just outside of Baltic.
A tip of the hat for a survivable landing.
About 8 miles from the crash site, the plane began experiencing problems with one engine, the pilot told investigators. That eventually prompted Pierson to shut down that engine and fly using only the other engine of the twin-engine, four-seat aircraft.
He said that as they were looking for a place to land, the second engine developed problems and shut down,
