Loaded firearm in carryon at ATL

Dumb move. This is negligence on the part of the LEO.

.22 Magnum revolver. Probably a Ruger Single Six which is single action without a tilt out cylinder, therefore rounds must be unloaded one by one similar to a Colt SAA "Peacemaker". The guy may have fumbled with the loading gate, and trigger while trying to figure out how to unload the pistol. Pure speculation on my part. However, guns just don't "go off" by themselves. You need to pull the trigger.

I understand unloading the weapon, but wth was he doing with his finger inside the trigger guard

Yeah, makes sense. If that was me and it was a weapon I was really familiar with (like a Baretta M9 or Sig .9) I might consider downloading it on the spot, but if I needed someone to talk me through it.....we ain't messing with it at the checkpoint!

Yeah, but if you bag it, box it what ever all you are doing is upping the chance that someone who wouldn't know to point it in a safe direction has the AD.

The comments asking "why was it loaded?" crack me up. Well, because an unloaded gun is called a hammer.

True, but why was it loaded is a valid question when transporting by airline.

Why was it loaded,
Why was it in a "bag" not a TSA approved case etc.

Yeah, the guy wasn't transporting the gun legally, didn't declare the firearm and wasn't checking it as baggage. The fact it was loaded is just icing on the cake. This will not turn out well for the gun's owner.

People do forget when they have guns or other contraband in carry ons. I was camping one week, went right to the airport for a work trip with the same bag, and forgot to take out my very large "survival" type knife. Very thick, five inch black blade. Went right through the x-ray. They saw it, and confronted me. I was surprised as heck. They just let me get out of line and I checked the bag. :(

You can't carry hammers on board either.
Because people don't kill people, hammers kill people.

Seriously, all this security does is stop ignorant wannabes. Someone with a bit of smarts in say, weapon making could fashion a piece out of a soda can and a twist of lemon, items readily available after the checkpoint.

Its been said before,

Security theater:idea:

used to get lots of strange looks handling an M240B in an airport in civilian clothing.

I'll bet! What was the reason for the light machine gun? Was the airport in Afghanistan?

There's a few FEDEX guys who might have a different opinion on that (unlike Northwest pilots, they got hammered after they got in the air).

Crash axes don't get up and walk by themselves nor do they have muderous intent.

The FEDEX nor the PSA Flight 1771 incidents would not have been stopped by TSA. In both incidents, the perp was properly badged (although their employment had been terminated).

There are NO LEO's involved. Just TSA screeners.
You need to read the article again. This wasn't TSA theater.

It was an Atlanta Police Officer who discharged the weapon. The TSA found the weapon and notified the Police who responded.

Well, when you fly my airline it is strictly bring your own gun - the pilot doesn't share...

denny-o

If we're permitted to carry anywhere we should be carrying everywhere -- including airlines, buses, trains, porta-potties, and discos.

What's the difference?

(Hint: none)

In this way we avoid messy unloading scenarios, TSA agent pat downs, and Four Billion dollar tax bills for "security."

True that...in the age of YouTube, stupidity seems to be amplified...

Sigh. I was working at DEA HQ when that incident happened.

It's not the bullet that hurts. It's the realization that yes, you ARE that stupid that hurts.
