I have not seen any posts about this new product so I thought I would share.

I stumbled across a new product from Lightspeed while looking at the Oshkosh announcements yesterday. The product is called Flightlink and its a audio recording app for iPhone/iPad. The app uses already built in electronics in the Zulu.2 to record every TX/RX and intercom audio. The app uploads it onto the device where you can replay and store the audio clip. The clips are recorded in real time so you can have instant access for playback. The app also has a "whiteboard" where you can write/draw notes beside the clip.

The clips are also uploaded to your iTunes account for off device access.

The only drawback is that the app is only compatible with the new Zulu.2 production run. It you have an older Zulu.2, like I do (DEC '11), then you have to get a factory retrofit. I called Lightspeed yesterday inquiring about the retrofit. The guy basically said that they will swap out the old electronics for the new and it will take about 5 days. The cost is around $65 and the service will not be available until mid-August.

To findout if your headset will work you can download their app and input you serial code or if your like me just call and ask.

So I will be sending in my headset hopefully before school starts. I think it will be a good training tool for me and my future "students". :D

P.S. Any good shipping options? Fedex, UPS or USPS?

Waste of time and money. I had this feature in an intercom set I purchased years ago when I was a newbie. Used it once and found out it wasn't worth it for me.

Bought my Lightspeed Zulu.2 after the first of the year. Don't plan on using the feature even if it has it.... but that's just me. I can see where a CFI and his student might find some use for it.

How does the audio data get to the iDevice? Can I assume BT?

So basically they already had a BT chipset in newer headsets to do the music/audio input and just wrote the code to receive BT audio on the iDevices. It's kinda a yawner for me.

The cutoff between older and newer devices does show there's a chipset change, so it would be interesting to do some high-end audio tests and see if there's a difference in audio quality going the other direction too, since now we all know there's a difference between old/new.

Not like BT audio is exactly "audiophile quality" anyway, though. It's compressed significantly.

I thought I saw at another booth that someone was doing voice recognition from the pilot's headset to the avionics in the panel. That part seemed maybe useful. Maybe. I've done some voice dictation stuff and it was painful to wait for the thing to respond. Would be cool if it listened in and responded to your radio replies with "point" in them and set the non-active side of the Comm radio to whatever you said.

Yep, the zulu's link via Bluetooth

While the Zulu's do link via Bluetooth for phone calls and music, this app connects via a cable. Doesn't work over Bluetooth (per the LS rep at OSH).

This is why it only works with newer Zulu.2's. I imagine there had to be some change in the internals to allow it to output audio over the 1/8" connector instead of only using it as an input.
