Summary:
· Ex-military aircraft, e.g. WWII bombers and fighters, were not designed with airliner-type operations in mind. Therefore the FAA requires special authorization in order to sell brief rides in these aircraft. This has been safely done since 1998 by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) and other smaller organizations with a FAA letter of authorization.
· According to the current limitations, these rides must land at the same airport of origination, be done during daylight hours, within a limited radius, and all pilots and maintenance personnel must submit to random drug and alcohol testing, just like airline employees do. Maintenance and records are subject to FAA scrutiny at any time. NO FEDERAL SUBSIDIES ARE EVER USED.
· These paid rides are termed a Living History Flight Experience (LHFE) by the FAA in recognition of the significance of allowing the public to experience flight in historic aircraft. In many cases, these LHFE rides make the difference between flying else permanently grounding these aircraft, which would then only be seen from a “safe distance” within a few museums, never to hear the engines or feel the thin aluminum skins. Note that flying at airshows is where most of the public ever sees such aircraft – not in museums.
· Each year, the FAA has added further limitation to this program without asking for any public or participant input. This year significant limitations are proposed which can effectively shut down any future LHFE operations. However the FAA is allowing public comment via their website.

Please take time to save this unique ability to bring history to the public in a way no other program can possibly do. It validates the sacrifices of our veterans, and brings the past alive to our young. Don’t let our politicians kill another piece of history.

FAA Review of the
Living History Flight Experience (LHFE) Program
**LHFE is our rides for hire program in limited and experimental aircraft**
The FAA has announced public meetings to gather additional technical input on the subject of exemptions relating to the LHFE. Input gathered will aid in developing future FAA guidance for evaluating LHFE petitions for exemption. The public meetings will be held on June 26, 27, and 28, 2012, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the FAA Headquarters in Washington D.C . Steve Brown and Mark Novak will be representing the CAF at the meeting and Steve will be giving our briefing. A copy of Steve's briefing and our comments on the specific questions the FAA is asking are both available on the links below.

Prior to the public meetings, the FAA is seeking public comment on the guidance THE LAST DAY TO POST IS JUNE 18TH!
It is important for YOU to go online and submit your comments in support of the program and the need for continuing industry coordination on proposed revisions. In the past, revisions have been imposed upon the exemption holders without coordination, or notice of intent before the fact. This meeting and the request for comments is a change in the right direction, but revisions need coordination-not simple gathering of information for their consideration in making the revisions. You should read our briefing and comments and then submit your own by following this link:
