I'm pretty sure it's BS, but scuba diving in the Bahamas in the early 90s, the dive master pointed to an island on the way to the dive site and claimed it was the island depicted in the opening credits. It kind of looked like the island but I imagine there are a million islands that do.

The island in the opening credit is Mokuoloe, in Kaneohe Bay on the east side of Oahu, but it looks very different now. I believe the pilot was shot on Kauai, but after that on a studio lot in California.

The opening scene of the Minnow leaving harbor was shot at Ala Wai Yacht Club, near Waikiki. A couple of things to look for - there are actually 8 people on the Minnow when leaving harbor and the flag in the background is at half staff, because the scene was shot days after JFK was assassinated.
