So, when things are JUUUUST right, Mars can be seen from Earth. It appears to be red, usually, since it is, in fact, colored red.

So, lets say you're standing on Mars, and things are JUUUUST right and you can see Earth. What color is earth? Blue? White, like a star? Maybe green?

I thought this was going to be another spaceship-on-a-treadmill thread... ;)

Have you read up on the hassles of landing heavy equipment on Mars? Specifically the velocity/altitude deceleration gap issue between mach 5 and mach 1? Imagine your stall speed being below mach 1 where the gear extends for a sensible landing (parachute deployment and low velocity touchdown) and above that the gear is up and the belly is covered in superdooper industrial strength guaranteed instant stop velcro (or nasa ntsb terminology: high kinetic energy soil sample mode) Of course your engine won't quit and auto-throttle won't let you slow below mach 5 before touchdown. It makes the treadmill problem look like trivia.

Earth is visible from Saturn, here, as that little dot on the left just outside the bright main rings:

NASA calls it "pale blue".

Looks just like an annular treadmill ;)
