lets say a guy was bored or just wanted to learn more about Avionics for when he might build his own airplane... what kind of courses or resources would he look for?

Just use the internet and browse around. Free online videos too.

As for GPS/NAV/COMS, you have Avidyne and Garmin. You can download their demos for free (I downloaded Avidyne simulator to my iPad).

There are aps to look for air traffic stuff on your couch, like FlightAware. And LiveATC to listen to current or past radio ATC transmissions.

There is ADSB that you can learn about. Shows you traffic and weather on a mobile device or tablet (or panel mounted GPS).

There are free and paid EFB aps that allow you to flight plan, check WX, airports, etc. Flight Plan Go and Avare are a couple. I pay for ForeFlight.

And there is actually a lot of ongoing development. Go to Garmin’s, Dynon’s, and other websites to be really enthused or confused.

And lastly, if you’ve never been to Oshkosh EAA Airventure, go and dive in head first.

Welcome to POA and back to aviation!

Actually, with the exception of GPS based navigators and glass cockpits, avionics haven’t fundamentally changed since you flew before. GPS navigators are pretty easy to learn since you already know how to fly a CDI or HSI which will be the indicator. Start by learning a Direct To. Once you can select your designation and keep the indicator centered and even with cheating by watching th magenta line. THEN learn to select an approach. Then activate and fly the approach. The navigator lead you there step by step.

Here's a freebe: https://www.faa.gov/regulations_pol...nced_avionics_handbook/media/FAA-H-8083-6.pdf

Here's more: https://dynonavionics.com/video-gallery.php

Here's a free "basic electricity and electronics course. Almost exaclty the same as it was when I attended the formal classroom version in Meridian Mississippi back in 1977: http://electriciantraining.tpub.com/

Here's some good hands-on "how-to" videos for the avionics home builder (4 pages with 26 videos): https://www.steinair.com/blog/videos/
