Go to the Navy Times link below and experience the final carrier flight operations for the F14 Tomcat. 4 minutes of history.

What replaces them? JSF? Super Hornet?

Super Hornet multi mission aircraft.

An F/A 18 will NEVER be an F14. It may have been Grumman Iron Works final plane, but it served the Navy as well as the first Grumman and all the ones in between.

The main reason the -18 has better fleet availability is because it's newer and people don't fix them when things break - they replace. If they can't replace enough LRU's, they send it to the NARF/Depot for repair and a new one is sent out.

It's the same as any new plane. Old ones are harder to keep running because the parts aren't there. The new one is someone's project and is going to look good, no matter what the numbers say.
