Last ace of WWII

Those Hellcats were cool and the pilots were heroes. It seems like a long time ago, but my grandmother was a kid when the war was going on. Lots have changed since then.

My mom was a early teenager during that time of unpleasantness, and turns 94 on 11 Sept.

My dad was in the navy preparing for the invasion of Japan, which thanks to fat man and little boy never had to happen.
My Dad was on the ground in the Philippines during the run-up to the invasion. I’m sensitive to the unspeakable horrors unleashed by those bombs, but also aware that Dad and many thousands of other servicemen likely wouldn’t have made it home otherwise.

He spent a year with the occupation forces after the war, including rotations outside and upwind of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Like so many veterans, he wouldn’t talk about his wartime years.
