PPL and flew for 15 years then had a coronary bypass at age 43. I did get a special issue 3rd class, but was before 2006. It was never revoked, but got too busy and stopped flying. Retired now and thinking about getting current and have a few questions about medical.

1) Since my medical was never revoked, I think I could fly as a sport pilot with drivers license instead of a medical. Is that correct?

2) If I wanted to fly with full privileges, I know I would need a new 3rd class first, even for basic med. I see a cardiologist yearly and no further cardiac problems. Any idea how involved getting a 3rd class would be, and how I would go about it?

When was your last medical issued? How long before 2006? It just needed to be valid at some point after July 14, 2006 to go BasicMed, so a special issuance medical could have been issued as early as July 2005 if it was valid for a year.

But yes, you could fly sport pilot provided your cardiologist is happy with your results.

or it it was a full medical (not special) issued in July 2004.....or later. Otherwise, you have to comply with therms of the Last SI auth letter you received, and succesfully win a 3rd class. Don'th have the letter? Call 405-954-4821 and they will send it to you.

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately last was in 2003. Also, SI letter required a yearly stress test and not sure if I did that in 2004. Had a nuclear stress test 2024 with no probs, but was just over a year ago so would probably need another to get a 3rd class. Not sure if insurance will pay for a yearly one.

IF you re-qualify 3rd class, you can go back to basic.....It would be a single run.
