Laser wind / ice sensor

Just think... in a few years this will probably get small enough (and with enough range) to be useful in GA aircraft for turbulence and icing avoidance. I know the big airlines--American, at least--played with similar technology:

The unit described is intended to sense wind velocity and direction a few hundred meters upwind for the purpose of optimizing a wind turbine. The only mention of ice was WRT the unit's ability to perform it's function in freezing rain. I see nothing about ice detection nor do I expect the wind sensing would be of much use in an airplane. What am I missing?
