Landing videos

I just realized this forum allows uploading videos as big as 5 meg in .mov format. My wife often sets our camera on the panel and records my landings, and I think many of the files are smaller than that. Some good, some bad. Anyone think there would be any value in posting them for critique so all could maybe learn something, or is there no real value for others? Aside from enjoying them, I always check them post flight to see where I went right or wrong for future reference.

I was thinking of doing the same (not posting here necessarily, but taking them) but asking someone from the ground to use my camera to make videos of my touch and gos - or at least the landing part.

Just make sure the camera stays pointed outside the cockpit. I think we all know how the FARs don't require the wearing of clothing while flying, and how you love to exploit that loophole. :) Elizabeth on the other hand, well, that's a different story.:D

Well, I've been posting my landings. Do you watch them, and if so - do you critique them from the standpoint of either learning what to or not to do? I'd like to think so, but you bring up an excellent question.

I'd hate to be wasting bandwidth if there is no interest in it.

I think I've checked out all your landings Nick. My question is how many approaches do you film because the last two you hit the CL and we all know that never happens two times in a row. LOL

yeah, you have to watch Joe, apparently he carries owls with him and likes to flash his hooters at truckers!

I've got a great deal of interest, but can't watch videos from work :( Since we started hitting the gym, we've not been going to the library to do more than check emails. Hence the reason we are going to abandon our "cell only" phone system and get landline again.

Here's a new farm video with a short field take off and short field landing. It includes a slip after crossing the trees at the creek. You have to wait to touch down after the ditch (in the shadow of the big oak tree) and you have to be down by the time you get to the sock or else you need to do a go-around. I also snuck in a roll and a Split-S and a Skyhawk and hay bales. :D

Adam Z. actually inspired me to make this latest video.

Frank was nice enough to put this on his server for me. Thank you Frank! :)

It's always fun seeing other people's flight videos. You can often learn something from them or at least see how other people handle fun airports and such.

Joe, is there any chance you'll do a video of the split-S from downwind to landing that were so good that your old instructors use to go to sleep while you were doing them as a student? :hairraise:

Anytime for you Diana. :) Just let me know if you make another one and need a place to put it. I'm not sure what the max bandwidth is. (try again later if it aborts) I'll leave them up there until I shut the sight down when I move or if we hit capacity and have to drop old stuff off - whichever comes first.

You're a sweetheart.

I tried putting one on Google, but they have to screen them first after you submit them and I haven't heard back from them.

Here's just a landing with no music...it'll be in the next video. Tom shot a yucky, bouncy landing of mine yesterday after my third acro session of the day. I probably won't post that one!

This short clip is landing over the wires while holding off till crossing the intersection and hopefully going slow over the speed bump (which you can see in the clip).

I would LOVE that. I have about 30 landing clips saved in my My Videos folder--most of them from others.

Very cool video, Diana!

How's the re-upholstery coming?

I seem to recall a TV broadcast of the Academy Awards hosted by David Niven, back when "streaking" first became popular (1974, according to internet sources). During the broadcast, someone streaked across the stage behind Niven. Niven's comment? “The only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by ... showing his shortcomings.”

You really sure you want to show your landings videos?

I was just looking at some of the pictures in the Photo Gallery.

Somebody forgot their after-takeoff checklist!

(I admit to having done this myself, and discovering it after wondering why the plane was going SO SLOW!)...
NOPE! :D Actually, if you could see closer, that would be me in the right seat . . . we were doing slow flight to stay in formation with the other plane so photos could be taken. Actually what would have concerned us would have been if we COULDN'T have gone that slow!

Aha!! See, that'll teach one to "judge" too early.... that high above the mountains, assumed you were in cruise. I'm assuming that was SoCal? I miss the mountains in Washington... Texas is SO FLAT (at least, the part where I live and fly most)!!!

I always enjoy Diana's videos. And her taste in music seems very appropriate. Don't stop feeding us, Diana.

I appreciate take off and landing videos as long as they're mostly in focus and not too shaky. AFA Ron's comment, I very much appreciate the transparency of pilots putting up their vids. Often, it is the worst take offs and landings which are the most instructional. Videos are fun to watch but they have a strong instructional component. To answer Joe's question I would say go for it.

Well, see. . . gotcha AGAIN!:D Nope, good ol' North Carolina - just east of Boone! :D

The date has been pushed back (again!) and the plans are to tear it down at the end of this month. Looks like it won't be done in time for Gaston's. :(

Too bad. Are you keeping the same color? I really like that sky blue.

Anyway, where are you posting your landing videos?? I couldn't find them.

With many of my reports of the places I've flown in New Mexico in Cool Places to Fly. I usually have either a landing video or a picture of the airport on short final.

Everskyward said:

Yeah, hopefully the color will be the same. It has to live up to it's name the "Citablueberria" as designated by Toby. I'm partial to those scallops, too. They remind me of clouds. :)

Rats, turns out to be irrelevant :( The smallest of the videos is 5.5 meg, most are around 8, and Cathy shot a two minute video of my straight in approach to LNS last weekend that is 30 meg  Oh well :(

And no, Ron, I wouldn't mind putting them here. Like I said, some are good, some lack a certain amount of perfection, and at least one is good for entertainment value, but since the actual "arrival" was witnessed by a fellow board member there's no use in hiding it anyway LOL.

Joe, you can also try posting videos on Flightlevel350.com, and then linking to them from here.
From the looks of some of the videos there they don't have difficult standards.

I've got quite a few.

This is a short field landing, it is fairly old. I've got about twice the hours logged now.

Here is my first landing in a tailwheel when I was getting my tailwheel endorsement.

http://jesseangell.com/video/nightlanding.wmv
Here is a landing at night.

http://jesseangell.com/video/nightslips.wmv
Here are two night landings, both fairly short field with slips.

now a video where I messed up
http://jesseangell.com/video/striketail.wmv
This is what happens if you flare very aggressively in a C-150. Oops.

Here is a video of Lance Fisher landing his Baron and Porterfield.

All of this and some other stuff is on my website:

Joe -
Are those MPG format? Convert them to wmv, or reduce the kbps on them. wmv formats are usually smaller than mpeg.

Diana: Thank you for the great clip. I really love when you post them. In addition to reminding me why I got my license, your vidios also bring back memories of growing up on the farm.

Gary.

They are .mov format, Quicktime. Is wmv smaller than .mov? If so, what program is good for converting them?

I think mov files can be huge too. When I got my webcam I got software with it that allowed me to convert from any video format to wmv with some nifty video production software.

It's what I used to make the movies at
http://webpages.charter.net/edfred/flying/

I'd check the software that came with your video capture or video camera or however you are making them.

Hmmm... I was thinking it was the pre-takeoff checklist of: START ENGINE

HEHE. :)
