I just got back from the Bahamas, after ten days, had a good trip .
Before I left, I did check the weather in route and in the Island I was flying too. All was clear, but windy, wind was 16-20 knots forecast in the Island area.
My Cherokee Six flies at approx. 125 knots average, but my ground speed was 168 knots flying over,, I should have known something was up.
As I circled the landing strip, and got near approach elevation, I could feel by butt tighten, this was not any 16-20 know wind.
But having landed in the Bahamas wind over 90 times, I thought I had all the bad landings practice with high winds and cross winds I needed, so I went for it.
My approach was normal, really RUFF, but I worked it down to the runway and started to deal with a really bad crosswind, turning hard into the crosswind I caught a wind gust...
My airplane was tossed upwards, and because my right wind was turned into the wind, it was forced down and my airplane was turned sidewise to the runway, I was about to come down on my right wing flying sidewise to the runway. I had my hand on the throttle as always, and went full throttle trying to straighten back to the runway and get my wing back up before it touched, I recovered the airplane back to the runway just as my right main touched down but my wing did not. The landing was not even hard down.
My instructor always told me, keep you hand on the throttle when take off and landing, and no matter what happens fly the airplane.. Good advice.
