I understand some busy airports charge landing fees to every aircraft that lands there. Where can you find the cost for it, and how exactly do you pay it? I've never seen a toll booth by a runway :)

I see in the AFD there's a line for "Ldg fee" for these airports, just nothing listing how much the fee is.

Just try not to make eye contact with anyone in the FBO. ;)

If you really want to know, go to airnav.com and call an FBO or the airport manager.

Doesn't have to be a busy airport. It's up to airport management on tie-down fees. Avoid them...don't try to cheat. If they get your tail number they can restrict you from landing there in the future.

Sometimes it's the airport, sometimes it's the FBO. At IAD for example, you pay about $8 to land. It goes to the airport authority. Then the FBOs charge you parking/handling fees (that goes to them). Nearly every airport I've been to if I want to know the details, call the FBO in advance and ask them.

I usually pick the most convenient place to land and then look up the fees. Unless it's egregiously bad ($100+) I chalk it up to the convenience.

When you contact them, make sure you ask the right question.

Me; "What are your landing fees?"

Them; "We don't charge for landing here." (note the way that is worded)

Me; "What fees do you charge?"

Them; "It depends."

Me; "I want to land, park for 2-3 hours, walk out the airport property, come back, get in, take off and fly away. What will I owe you."

Them; "Well, ya see - that depends...."

Hanscom (KBED) does not charge a landing fee. They charge you to take off. Company called Vector scrapes the N number from either the radio log (billed me and I just passed through) or radar info. They also charge a premium if you leave 11pm to 7am. The FBOs there charge for parking, escorts for non resident visitors, and security devices you are required to have.
Operated by MASSPORT, a few years ago they wanted the EAA B17 to pay for 24 hour security. They told them 2 days before the aircraft was scheduled to be there. I will not land there until MASSPORT is dead and buried. Putting them under Mass DOT, doesn't do it.
Nantucket charges $6 for small GA that you pay on the way out of the gate. No matter where you park on the tarmack, there is a shuttle available to drive you back and forth.
Good restaurant there too. And the gift shop is open again.
Six airports yesterday on a Poker Run for Homes for the Troops. Not one fee! Five in NH and one in Me. And I got an invite to a BBQ at Keene next month (third Sunday of Sept, if you are interested)

Landing fees are usually charged through a third party billing service. They bill the registered owner. Ramp fees are a different animal. Either call the FBO before hand or check the comments in air nav. Most FBOs are now requiring a fuel purchase to wave fees.

Because there are so many variables, the best solution is normally to call the FBO you are parking at. As mentioned above, it is important to ask about fees charged by the airport AND by the FBO. For instance, taking a light single into KTEB is going to run you about $20 in airport fees, plus whatever the parking fee is of the FBO you are going to.

Some fees are based on type, some on weight, some on category/class--so the only real solution is to call and ask.

Call the airport manager or ask the FBO on field
