I cannot understand these complaints. The airport was there far before any of these folks bought their homes. They certainly knew the airport was located there. Maybe they would rather have the airport close and all the economic impact it brings to the community disappear

article HERE

As of 3:56pm today (Monday), all 6 comments on the article are pro-airport and diss the anti-noise folks.

I'm guessing the neighbors were not all wound up last Wednesday when the Prez. used the airport. There were lots of copters hovering then.

6:25pm, and all eleven comments are pro-airport and belittle the anti-noise twits.

I don't understand why we don't put mufflers on airplanes. They are required in Europe. Rotax requires them on their engines. I just don't get why GA doesn't require mufflers.

I think they do have mufflers. Have you ever heard a car without a muffler? It's a lot louder than the noise I've heard any piston airplane make.

OMG. I love this quote:

Improve the counter-flow strategy: The noise control strategy employed at the airport encourages flights to come and go from the north end, away from the major population center. But last year, more than 54 percent, or 44,000 aircraft, flew over the city. SASYNA said the airport should charge higher fees for planes flying over the city.

If only the neighbors could get the wind to always blow from the North, planes could take off to the North. Would kind of suck for landing from the North though. :mad2:

Remember: Madison is 38 square miles surrounded by reality.

Opposite direction operations? That's insane! :hairraise:

Bingo.

Harleys are A LOT louder than our little airplanes.

Aircraft Spruce has some diagrams of Cessna exhaust systems, and the cylindrical objects in the middle sure look a lot like mufflers.

Their page on Beechcraft exhaust system lists mufflers:

Those are just the two manufacturers I checked.

It is nice to see this nonsense met with the disdain I am seeing in the comments section.

Stock Harleys have quiet mufflers. Owners replace them with loud ones. Visit the Harley equivalent of this forum and you'll find that's half of what they talk about.

Plane mufflers are loud already.

I think it is an appealing idea to have noise mufflers. But more so for the passengers than for the neighbors. A piston plane as quiet as a car could be very appealing and welcome. Unlike a car the main discomfort in a GA plane is the loud noise. I am surprise that on airplane specs the internal noise level is never shown. It is like nobody cares :dunno:

Isn't the prop the dominate source of noise?

Almost any certified airplane has muffled exhaust. If it doesn't, it has a turbo that does the same thing.

Many homebuilts have no mufflers.

Most GA aircraft noise comes from the propeller, anyway.

Aircraft cabin noise is very difficult to reduce. The engine cannot be mounted on the really soft engine mounts that car engines are, because of the thrust and gyroscopic loads they handle, so more vibration is transmitted to the airframe. Insulation tends to add a lot of weight, and is quite bulky, so the airframe would have to be bigger to allow thicker walls for that insulation so that the cabin doesn't get far smaller. That adds drag. The propeller's blast is a series of pulses off the blades, and those pulses beat on the windshield and anything else in the way, generating an enormous amount of noise. And finally, the typical cruising airspeeds are far higher than any car, making much more wind noise.

Airliners are quieter because of those vibration-free turbines, no propellers, an already heavier cabin structure to deal with pressurization loads and lots of insulation because of the very low temps at altitude.

Not in The People's Republic of Madison! They were probably bowing towards the direction of Air Force One!

You buy a house just off the end of a runway because it is cheap.

You realize that the noise is keeping your house value down and that if the noise went away you could make a lot of money when you sell the house.

You start complaining about the noise.

Planes fly thousands of feet above us normally, even at airporst pattern altitude is 1000 AGL. Harleys go by often only a few feet away, and I guess most of the owners put louder mufflers on to stroke their Baby Boomer, Walter Middy egoes because almost all of them I see are LOUD.

The loudest pipes I heard were on a pickup....one of those chromed out, jacked-up pickups that probably has never been within spitting range of a dirt road.
