OK..cabin fever has set in...

Can anyone explain this to me scientifically?

This is two pictures taken of a spoon placed in a small pot just used to cook chili. These pictures are taken after spraying water in the pot, then submerging the spoon into the water. I noticed the outline and tried it again a few minutes later.

Same result. This outline, which appear to be grease of some form, is not ON the spoon but on the surface of the water...

Yup...

Surface tension formed as the spoon sunk into the liquid ....

Thanks! Let me pose a few question in an effort to gain a slightly better understanding...The water was very agitated on the second try...I can't speak to the first try...

How does surface tension work with agitated water surface or does it even matter?

Does the tension form in the shape of the object that breaks the surface?

Does the temperature of the water matter?

Do differing temperatures (adding hot water to cold water) matter?

There was a layer of grease on the surface of the water because of different specific gravities. You lowered the spoon through it. The curved bottom of the spoon pushed down where it contacted the grease. The grease had to go somewhere to get back on top of the water, so it flowed around the spoon until it reached the surface and left an outline of the spoon.

I don't think its surface tension, I think it's something called the Draugon effect. Spoon is cooler than the water thus cooling the water directly above the rim of the spoon, closest to the surface cooling the water directly above the rim of the spoon, congealing the grease.

I thought this as well...see above question about temperature...

But this morning , after sitting out overnight, I simply picked the spoon up, which is no doubt at room temperature) and mixed the water up quite a bit and it came back...although in not as clear of a form...

I am going to go drive on some ice...I am going stir crazy here!!!

Too much damn liquid in your chili. I never add water to my chili. I add tequila.

The pot is in the sink...:yesnod:

Chili was marginal at best... but not from too much water...came from less than stellar ingredients...and a spur of the moment decision to cook chili...

Kelvin, here's your problem.

You aren't flying enough. :D

That is the standardized test restaurants use to see if they are living up to their nickname.:D

We got snowed in...I cooked (marginal) chili...this "thing " appeared in the chili pot...

I've been lucky and missed all the "snowed in" stuff. Unfortunately, folks that needed to do stuff for me didn't. As a result, nothing got done for two weeks. I hate the sit-n-spin mode!! :mad2:

Snowed in? That's why we have 4x4 and studded snow tires.
