Here's a good exercise / example to show why we need to scan the skies.. Because, if you fix your gaze on one object long enough while you yourself are in motion, your peripheral vision goes blind.

Well now I know that if I'm ever in a spin and the trees start to disappear that it's all an optical illusion.

It's probably meant to show how if you fixate on something your peripheral vision diminishes.. Sheesh
