Well this is the weekend for the 71st King Salmon Derby, and you can't keep your King Salmon. Fish and Game has closed King Salmon Fishing for SE Alaskan waters. Catch and release only.

I guess there has been a record low return of Kings this year so they closed King fishing until the end of September.

Fisherman in the derby can keep Coho Salmon but no King's. Not sure about the rest of the state but I have heard there were a lot of closures this year.

Global warming or overharvesting? Sure would be nice to see a healthy King run soon.

Man, I'm envious Bill. Would love to do salmon fishing sometime, but only if I can keep them for dinner.

Post some photos!

You can keep the coho, I'll wait until September for the Kings.

My wife is sure letting me know that we won't get any salmon this year....

Hopefully the closure will ensure a healthy King population in the future.

Drinking. On boats. The fishing is just something to do in between beers.

Well, yeah, there is that. The last time I went salmon fishing out of Berkeley was the year before they closed the season down due to lack of fish. Five hours, not a single fish caught on the boat.

Well so far the lead fish in the derby is 16.5lb. Coho's can weigh as much as 35lb I think an average size is about 10/12lbs. Kings can get a lot larger I think the record king is close to 100lbs.

The legal limit before the closure was a King greater than 28" that's about a 10lb fish. Biggest King I have caught was a little north of 40lbs.

We had a good king year in south central. It's over up here. Silvers are strong now.

ADFG doesn't always get it right. Closures are a gov't thing.
