JPI 730/830 mounting: Horizontal or Vertical?

Depends, are you cutting a new hole. If it's going in existing hole which way does it fit better?

Existing hole. Removing the JDM700. It can fit either way, so, able to do either.

You can rework your panel a little and flush mount it. That's what I did with one of mine.

One of my panels had 2 G5s, which are surface mounts. When I put in the JPI, it didn't bother me to make that a surface mount, too. When I re-did the panel in the 182, the G5s were mounted in a recessed mount. It would have been sinful not to have put the JPI in a recessed mount, too.

We (4 pilot partnership) installed one a few years ago horizontally. Horizontal because that was the only way it would fit on the panel at the time. 4 cylinders. We recently cleaned up the panel and finally removed all the steam gauges, providing extra space. I suggested changing it to vertical because it would give us us two extra data fields, and the other three went along. I have to admit I liked it better horizontal. How much of that preference is primacy of learning vs a real difference, I don't know. We wanted the buttons on the bottom, but had to put them on top to make it fit. Would look better if they were on the bottom. YMMV. Good luck.

I want more info on the screen, so I went horizontal.

ah!!! Thank you both.

So there are more data fields vertical?

My buttons are on top and I hate it. Hand blocks the screen so you can't see what you are doing with the two finger punch. But mine is in a very tight spot and only fits that way.

Mine was vertical for 6 cylinder.

Mine is vertical. It would hit the HSI if it were horizontal.
